I read a discussion on this subject on the MOC Forum, but nothing in the posts content gave an indication of what it is. Apparently has something to do with fuel mileage. I asked there what this means and have not had any response in over 2 days. It appears that on that forum if you are not one of the "chosen few" your questions go ignored. Thanks in advance for help with this topic.

The only regeneration I'm familiar with has to do with cleaning out the DPF on the '08 diesels. The truck computer senses the "load" of particulate matter in the filter and tells the engine to pass diesel fuel into the exhaust to literally burn up the matter in the filter. This drastically reduces the mpg. The exhaust temp is about 2.5 times as hot during this process. This occurs only when the truck is not being driven at a high rpm for a long period of time...such as around town. Otherwise the exhaust is hot enough already to do the trick. You will notice a power loss, puff of white smoke and the mpg meter take a steep dive.

Thanks VOLWING1, you nailed it! You described the symptoms the others described, but you explained why. Makes me extra glad I bought a 2007.

The regen only takes about 20 minutes and happens approximately once each tank of fuel, so it really doesn't affect your mileage very much unless all your driving is city driving. One way to decrease the regenerations is to NOT let your DMax idle for long periods of time.

Its a lesson learned on the MOC that is why I left!

What "volwing" said is correct, although I never have experienced a power loss or saw white smoke but I do very little in town driving. Also use your E/B to keep carbon from building.

And I thought it was just me. I was beginning to think I had bad breath or body odor! I won't be going back either. Even though I really like my Montana I almost wish I had bought something else.

The regeneration cycle decreases fuel mileage for two reasons. One, the truck has a DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) on the exhaust which creates a restriction; and two, the regeneration cycle injects a small amount of fuel into the exhaust during the exhaust stroke to heat up the DPF which traps the soot that would otherwise be expelled into the atmosphere. This heating up of the DPF turns the toxic soot into harmless ash. The DPF will need to be removed and cleaned periodically (~100,000 miles IIRC).

From the best I can tell, my 2008 F450 goes into regen about 1x per 250 miles and uses up close to 1 gal of fuel. I add Motocraft multipurpose centane improver to every fill-up also.
