As you're heading west on I-20, you might see signs for US-287 as you approach the I-820 interchange (Exit 442B).
Ignore those -- you might save a half mile or so, but the pavement on I-35W is a lot friendlier to your seat cushion than what you'll find on the MLK freeway....
You might also be tempted to take I-820 along the east side of Fort Worth.
Don't fall for it. It's a nightmare between I-30 and I-35W as you go thru North Richland Hills and Haltom City, and has multiple choke-points regardless of the time of day. Even if your destination is in those cities, avoid it...

My last trip through there I took US 69 North from I-20 near Tyler and then West on US 82 at Bells and onto US 287 at Henrieta. Nice country drive if your not in a big hurry.

No doubt about it, this is the best overall route from the east, bypassing the entire DFW area, and the never ending miss-mash of unrelenting traffic.
But, that wasn't the intent of the OP's original question.

Been that way - DW said it took too long - I say maybe 20 min longer. I have not looked into that route for height issues. My guess is that since it is a US highway, it should be OK.

grey eagle,
I got that route from you last year and it worked out really well.
The OP later stated he was heading to Amarillo so I thought I would throw it out there in case he wanted to avoid DFW altogether.
