We are Wisconsin residents and bought our used rig from a dealer in Illinois, and paid no sales tax in the contract. We were given an Illinois title signed and stamped free of any leins.

When we brought our rig into Wisconsin, we registered it here, and we wrote the sales price, minus our tradein, and paid 5.5% sales tax on the balance to Wisconsin Dept. of Motor Vehicles (DMV) at the same time we licensed it.

If the dealer gave you license plates for the state of purchase the motorhome had to be registered and licensed in that state. The sales tax would have had to be paid in that state to receive that states license plates.

If he gave you an Intransit Permit and NO license plates the motorhome was not registered in that state and he should send you the Certificates of Origin. There would be 2 Certificates of Origin, one for the chassis and one for the house. You'd then send both of these to your home state, pay your states sales tax and you'd receive a Title of Registration and license plates from your home state.

Since you received license plates from the state where you purchased the motorhome the sales tax had to been paid in that state. You do not have to pay sales tax in more than one state. Your sales paperwork should show the sales tax paid and that would be proof from you home state that the sales tax was paid. You should receive a title from the state of purchase since you have that states license plates. Take that title to your state and transfer the title to your home state.

I bought my motorhome from NY and I live in PA. I paid no sales tax to NY. THe NY dealer gave me an Intransit Permit to move the motorhome from NY to PA and that was good for 30 days. When the dealer receive both the Certificates of Origin from Winnebago they mailed both Certificates of Origin to me. I then took those, paid the sales tax to PA and registered the motorhome in PA. I received a PA title and license plates. I had NO NY temporary license plate because the motorhome was no registered in NY. All I had to drive the motorhome was an Intransit Permit.

$9000 taxes due in YOUR state or the state in which you made the purchase? If taxes are due in your state, so be it. That's the way it is. The out-of-state dealer could not collect taxes for an out-of-state registration. He should merely send you, or your lender, the MSO. At that point you go register it and pay the sales tax in your state.

I bought a few vehicles and my current motor home out of state and paid the out of state tax. Before I buy I call my state's DMV and found out if there is a reciprocal agreement with that state and mine on the sales tax. The tax I paid has always been credited in my home state. You need to call your DMV and ask the same question. Your bill of sale, maybe even the financing agreement, should reflect the taxes.

The taxes have been paid, without that happening you would not have a title. Take your title, the bill of sale and head off to your DMV. When I did it was a simple process. They had a chart of reciprocal agreements, checked it, credited the taxes paid.

How foolish can people be? Pay interest on a sales taxes, that's crazy. Next thing will hear is that the dealer found a payment to fit your budget? Now you'll be up-side down in the amount you own on the coach for the rest of your life.
Foolish people and deceptive dealers cause these situations. You should only buy what you can afford and never take a deal that is structured to fit your budget or has a super low interest rate. If it's to good be to true, it is.

I suspect you had the sales tax from the state you purchased the vehicle in figured in the sale, not you resident state. Resident state should give you credit on what you paid in purchase state.
Example > We bought a MH in S Carolina. The most sale tax you have to pay there is either 300 or 600 (CRS syndrome!) dollars. I tried everyway that I could figure and still be legal to register it in SC. No luck and stay legal. When I paid the over 10 thousand sales tax (7%) in Georgia, I was credited with the tax amount I paid in SC.

How does this happen with people buying vehicles that cost in excess of a hundred thousand dollars? The state and federal laws are very specific and carry huge penalties to the dealer for violating them. Regardless of any statements that may or may not have been made by the sales person, there has to be a detailed buyer's order not to mention a federally mandated contract for financing that details the transaction.

Reading and understanding these contracts, before signing them, would easily stop all these "the dealer lied to me" accusations. If it is not in writing, it is not valid! These contracts, if read, will detail how much and to who the tax money was paid, or not. There have been innumerable consumer protection laws passed. USE THEM!

Manufacturer's Statement of Origin. It's the original document that comes to the dealer, from which the first title is issued.
