Granted it's "only" foot surgery, but it's a doosey! I'm scheduled for surgery July 24 and will have a number of things fixed. This will be my FOURTH and hopefully FINAL foot surgery! I once asked the doc to simply lop off my feet and sew new ones on and for some reason, he refused to do so.
The screw that I had installed 14 years ago is now moving and needs to be removed. It didn't do what it was supposed to do, so it can be removed and not replaced -- especially since it now appears to be moving. That's incision #1.
Seeing as I'm having #1 done, the doc is going to "shave" a "pointy" bone that is causing a HUGE and very painful callous on the bottom of my foot. I've been dealing with that for at least 20 years. Without the "pointy" bone, the callous should go away.
#3 will take care of what's called a "hammertoe" which is becoming painful. As long as they're working on the foot, let's just get it all done. The "hammertoe" will require the removal of a small bone at the first knuckle, just below the toenail.
Doesn't that sound like fun!
The interesting thing is that the doc said that with the three separate incisions and all the work they're going to do, it's going to be rather painful post-op. She suggested that they use a "block" or what I call an "epidural" that will numb my leg from the knee down for THREE DAYS! Yeppers, that's THREE DAYS that my leg will be numb from the knee down! That's going to be really strange to say the least! I'm hoping that by the time the "block" wears off, most of the post-op pain will be gone.
I'm actually very happy about the surgery. I've been dealing with foot pain for so long now and frankly, I'm tired of it.
Oh, and for all you ladies out there -- 90% of my foot problems can be directly related back to the 15 years or so when I was young and skinny and stupid and wore 3-4 inch heels every day to work! Yep, they looked GREAT, but I'm sure paying for it now!
Julie, I had my hammertoes taken care of when I was 16. Three years later, yep, turned right back under. I have never worn heels in my life, inherited the problem.
Sharon, I was surprised when the doc said it was a hammertoe. I thought that because the screw was pulling out, that it was pulling that toe over, too.
I've heard of many folks who had their bunions done and they grew back. I consider myself lucky that 17 years later, my bunion is still gone. I give all the credit to the doc that did the surgery. He was an AWESOME foot doctor and the only one I ever wanted to operate on my feet. Unfortunately, he's 250 miles away now. I'm lucky that we have the Marshfield Clinic up here and I have great faith in my new doctor. Considering where we are, we are lucky to have world class health care available just 30 miles away.
Hope it solves all of your problems, Julie. I don't have wonderful feet, but I live in Birkenstocks, so I'm hoping that I'll postpone the kind of problems my mom has had with hers.

Sharrlan -- that's exactly what they're going to do for me. You'd think that after 30+ years they'd have come up with a better solution! I sure hope it doesn't come back. I don't want to keep having these surgeries!
