If I am going to a "destination" and planning to stay a while, I will often make a reservation. When on the road traveling, I never make reservations. I never know where I will be when I decide to park for the night.

While traveling the DW starts looking at places down the road in early afternoon, she will call head to see if they room for us, for a projected stop around 3 or 4 in the afternoon.

It sounds like it would be best for you to just stop when you want to. You can use the Trailer Life directory when you are ready to stop. Have a great trip!

Since you plan to cross the border into Canada and then back into US - make sure you have a letter from the actual owner (name on title/registration) giving you permission to use the MH, AND the "Canadian proof of insurance" card from whoever carries their insurance.
And donCt forget your own correct ID info. to get back into US - birth certificates, photo ID or passports - for everybody on board. Life is no longer simple!

be careful on this forum. Most of the folks here will probably want to call your friend and chew him out for letting you borrow his RV.
Other than that, have a good trip. I'm a little jealous. A few things came up this year and time-wise we're not able to take off more than a couple of days at a time.
Using Street & Trips, I found 12 campgrounds within 25 miles of Route 1 between Medicine Hat and Winnepeg, a distance of 625 miles, and three of those are in either Medicine Hat or Winnepeg. I don't know if any of them have hookups. Following Rt 2 through Montana and North Dakota won't be a whole lot better. Only 22 between Cut Bank and Minot. Just be prepared to dry camp in rest areas if you have to.
Also, if you decide to go the Canada route, no handguns allowed, and no driving in Canada if you've ever had a DUI.
We never call ahead to make reservations , unless we plan to stay for a week or longer. We arise early, leave around 8 AM, drive about 300 miles at most,(we never hurry either) then get off the road around 3 PM(allows time to stop at interesting sites). This allows plenty of time to relax, repair something if required, cook dinner, etc. An added benefit to stopping that early is you always find a vacancy.
If you travel with a full tank of fresh water, you can take advantage of over-nighting in a walmart parking lot to reduce expenses. Look at this freecampgrounds.com website and take note of those along your route.

Right in time for Happy Hour!! We don't usually make reservations unless it's someplace we REALLY want to stay, such as New Brighton State Beach on the California coast. We'll be there end of October...
