We are planning on driving I 5 from Mt. Shasta to San Diego this week. How bad is the smoke?

Bad enough that you can't see the hills and you can smell it. Wind is pretty normal tonight though from Sacramento to Modesto so hopefully in the next couple days it will clear up a bit.

I'm heading in the opposite direction soon, I was wondering when does the smoke start heading north on the 5? I also heard one of the fires jumped 299 by redding.

I just drove down I5 from Roseburg, OR to Sacramento. The smoke went as far up as the Medford/Ashland area. In the north, Redding down to the Sacramento Valley, visibility was about 1 mile, further south visibility went down to about 1/4 mile near of Sacramento. The cars had their headlights on, everything smells like smoke, and my eyes were watering.

My wife and I are thinking of heading to Burnt Ranch (on 299, west of redding) to see the in-laws, sounds like the drive is going to be worst than I thought.

It was a lot better today in the Bay Area. Note that southbound I-5 is closed in Sacramento through 5:00 AM on the 15th - Link

Went from Sac to Florence Or yesterday on I 5 and the smoke was really bad
thru Calif. At times you could only see about 100 yards. After Redding north it was not bad. Low 60s in Florence, 101 degrees in Sac Ca. 41 here in Florence
this morning.. Gas was cheaper in Oregon by 10 to 15 cents over Calif

Bakersfield to Bay area smoky yesterday. Worsens midway due to the 165000 acre fire in Big Sur. Still bearable, and better than the north valley Redding and above.
You just won't see all the pretty mountains like normal; but unless you are asthmatic you'll be fine.
I think they opened up highway 1 around big Sur yesterday too.

Better if the in-laws visited you? 299 is kind iffy on being open.

I wish I could get them to come down here (southern Cal),Ive offered but my father-in-law is a bit on the stubborn side. Thanks for the input, so 299 can be a bit dicey. I need to think about this one. Thank you eveyone, I really appreciate the road updates.
