As of now, there's no "warning" on 299 other than one for construction delays. *But*, www.inciweb.org reports that 299 (on the Burnt Ranch side per the post by "Mr. Steve") is subject to periodic closures due to "fire activity". If a visit to the in-laws isn't critical, you might want to postpone it! BTW, what is *their* assessment of the local conditions?

Per my Father in-law each day is a bit different depending on the wind, most days very smokey and he said that they had a few evacuations around whiskey town, but he felt that 299 would be fine for us coming through. Parts of the moutain side they call iron side ,which I think faces the Trinity River, are on fire too. The fire department has set up a base at the school in Burnt Ranch which is right next to my in-laws. He said it sounds like LAX all day long with the helcopters over head. Having the fire department there makes my father in-law feel pretty safe. But, for all I know I could end up flynig up there to get my in-laws and bringing them down to southern California if things get worse. I think i'm going to wait until closer to the end of the month and see what things are like. I will check the web sites for road conditions, thank you all for your help. I'll keep you posted.

Sounds like the name was probably apt....

Thanks for the update. It looks like our plans may be changing. The smoke at Burnt Ranch is pretty bad now so we are talking about picking up the in-laws in Eureka and if they are willing we will bring them down to southern California. But, like I said earlier my father in-law is pretty stubborn.
We made it back to San Diego. It was very smoky from Redding to Red Bluff. After that it was high smoke. You couldn't see the hills. Highway 299 was closed when we drive by. We didn't see blue sky until we got to Temecula. thanks for all the information.
