We use the TST singles from Wal Mart. They are very effective and Formaldehyde free.

Gee.. I never have an odor problem.. Normally I use nothing at all, Just water, If it's going to be a long time between dumps I use Odorlos or another biological (Neither is blue, neither has Formaldehyde in it) and never have a problem

Don't know what is wrong with your system

I do know places (Mostly CA or on/near the CA border) that won't let you hook up to their sewer system if you use Formaldehyde in your tanks.

I mean, you want to get rid of it, not preserve it.

Used both and agree the blue stuff seems to work a bit better.

I try only to use blue in the hottest weather.

That orange stuff isn't the only alternative to formaldehyde. Have you tried the enzyme tank products? It sounds like you're looking for a reason not to "go green," but I'll give it a shot anyway.

The label on RV-trine enzyme holding tank product warns that formaldehyde kills the enzymes, and residual formaldehyde in the tank will affect the enzymes' performance, but subsequent uses will resolve that issue. Maybe it's the same with the orange stuff, although I've never been a fan of orange-type products in general.

But I generally don't use anything at all in the black thank and haven't had a problem for five years of fulltiming. Might there be something wrong with your holding tank?

Where we are right now, we're dumping only every three weeks, and that's at a place without water so I can't use my Sewer Solution or backflush. And we're sort of stretching to go three weeks, so we're not using lots of water to flush the toilet. Oh, and it's summer and really hot (90-100 degrees).

So I'm using RV-trine enzyme and Calgon water softener to give the black tank every opportunity to empty properly on the first try. No odors whatsoever, and the black tank emptied quite nicely and was completely clear after dumping one gallon of water down the toilet when the valve was open.

You really should give another product a try before swearing allegiance to formaldehyde. You don't have to tell anybody you're being kind to the environment.

Well, unless you're like the guy I saw who dumped his tank without bothering to use a hose. The contents were blue, which I'd never seen before, and I now wonder if that was formaldehyde. Whatever, he was plenty happy to share it with everyone who might come within three feet of the hole at the dump station.

get on line and look up Happy Camper. use it and you will be a happy camper. this is very good stuff, it works when others don't. I recommend it, that alone should make you want to run out and buy some. LOL

Thanks everybody for the advise. My tank is brand new. Our first two trips in the new RV we used the formaldehyde. It worked great in "Africa Heat" conditions.

On our third trip, I swithced to the "Orange Flavor" (as one poster said and I laughed right out of my chair) stuff. You know the rest of the story on that stuff. It didn't work.

My tank is fine. Our RV has the built in water jet nozzles where I hook up a "grey" hose line and flush out the tank with streams of water. I do that until the tank runs clean. Plus, I use the clear "see-through" couplings and visually inspect the tank (at a distance).

I'd be willing to give it one more try by using perhaps the "happy-camper" stuff as some have mentioned.

Thanks again.

I was reading this thread and I looked quickly to the side at a posters name and I thought one said Bigturd!!! I about lost it laughing and then realized it was Bigburd........one letter off. No wonder I misread it. No offense intended to Bigburd....I just cracked myself up with my own mistake....and my mistake happened to be in the middle of a black tank chemical discussion.

I have been using a FF for years with no problems. It is not the orange kind.

What some people fail to realize is that you can’t just switch to formaldehyde free tank chemicals and expect it to work right away.

Formaldehyde-free products use enzymes and natural bacteria to break down waist. Just like Rid-X does in your septic system.

If there is even the smallest trace of formaldehyde in your holding tank it will KILL the natural enzymes and bacteria that make the eco-friendly treatment work. If that happens you might as well be treating your tank with water.

To get the natural stuff to really work you need to do a really good flush on the black and grey tanks. Then fill them full of water and the new chemical and let them sit for 24 hours or so. Then they should work.

We switched to eco-friendly chemicals because many of the campgrounds we stay at do not want you using formaldehyde based chemicals. This is because they are on septic systems and the formaldehyde causes them to back up.

Can’t speak for the “orange stuff” but we use RV TEC 100 holding tank treatment from Wal-Mart. It works just fine and doesn’t cost very much either.
