On many cooking shows they will show the chef making a meal out of a tiny piece of meat, with a dollop of sauce on it with three beans and half a tomato as the vegetables. The entire dish is drizzled with something sticky & a few green flakes are then sprinkled on top. The audience, if any, oohs & ahs and the 'diner' makes some comment how they can't wait to get stuck in.
In other shows they will show some wonder chef going into a struggling restaurant to help them out & his first suggestion is to reduce the portion sizes.
A local chain had run a series of ads in which the smaller sizes of their dishes were shown as a favourable feature.
Am I missing something here? Does anyone actually prefer this nouveau mini meal cuisine, when you have to fill yourself with bread just to get full on a meal that costs three times as much as a meal that is one third the size of one at 'Joes Ribs & Chops'.
Assuming the quality is the same, what do you prefer? 'Alfonso's' or 'Joe's' ?
Never miss an opportunity to walk on the grass.

I've shown up at some "trendy" restaurants and been served what I deem "fancy plate creations". They are essentially nothing more than little sculptures and paintings made out of food. . . I'd be disappointed in them as an appetizer, much less as a main course. The bill associated with these bite-sized entrees is typically $25-40.
Now when we save up to go out for "fine dining" on rare special occasions - we stick to steak houses. You can get some very upscale food and the size of your steak is listed right there on the menu (or the serer can tell you), so you know you'll leave satisfied. . . instead of leaving and having to top off your fifty dollar meal with some Wendy's just to make your stomach stop grumbling.

I'll go to Joe's. If I want art, I'll go to a gallery or a museum.

We never eat anywhere that requires the food prep person to play with our food. I want what I order to be cooked the way I asked, served quickly on a clean plate or in a clean bowl and that's all. Anything beyond that 'presentation' is playing with my food and you won't see me eating there. I'll eat all I want and if I choose to not finish the meal I'll take home any leftovers and have a sandwich or nice lunch the next day. Watching these TV cooking shows isn't my idea of fun tv so I can't say one way or the other about their finished product. Fine dining for us will be tonight as we stop in Memphis and eat at Joe's Crab Shack.

I am not one of those people. Give me my local Beauregard's and their fried baloney sandwich any day of the week (but not more than once a week as the food there will kill you).

One of the problems here in the US is that the average restaurant meal would feed a family of four in most countries.
And in fact it is 4 times what you should be eating in this country
So yes, Reducing portions is a good thing
Just like I checked the size of the trowsers I used to wear on the job (52) and the size of the ones I just bought (48) you see.. I reduced portions
found a place to have breakfast that serves up a smaller plate, just as filling but you know what.. It's not as emptying as meals at other places (Emptying of the wallet that is)
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

I can do a gourmet meal every once in awhile if it's a special occasion or DW wants to do something different. We are not big on paying expensive prices for mediocre meals so the few times we do go a little overboard we are familiar with where, how much and what to expect.
To go into a place we are not familar with and order an expensive entree is not likely to happen for us. Each to their own. I do know couples who thrive on the "experience and ambience". I'm not one of them.

reducing the size of a meal is one thing, but having a meal so small that you walk away from the table hungry after paying 50 bucks a plate is WRONG....
give me a OUTBACK steak anyday

Absolutely. It was in the news the last couple of days that the real secret of long life isn't in some pill, it's eating less.

If you can't tell the difference (DW can't), go to Joe's, and take half of it home. We've started doing that, or having an appetizer instead of the full meal, or splitting a meal. Saves money for gas and helps us fit in our clothes.
