I have the opportunity to pick up a 16' fiberglass canoe pretty cheap. I'm guessing it needs a little fixing up, as I have not seen it yet. I'm wondering if it's possible to shorten it down to about 10'. Somethings i'm worried about are first: Safety. Like I said, i have not seen it. but if I removed the back 6' I'm not sure how stable it would be at that point. Secondly: floatability! What are the chances this thing would ever float again?

Has anyone ever attempted this?

Not that I'm aware of. Most people who want something that short go with a Sea Ark. I believe they even make something that short that will float. You try taking a 16' canoe down to a 10' canoe and it will never regain it's structural integrity and the safety of the craft will be gone.

I will resist the temptation to make a comment about washing it in really hot water....

If it's really fiberglass and not moulded polywhatever, one might be able to shorten it, but it's probably not worth the effort.

Hey, I was on a submarine, USS Flasher (SSN-613) that was cut in half and 13 extra feet added in the middle. But then, they knew what they were doing.

I would think the integrity, stability of the original design would be lost and a canoe is generally a tippy craft to begin with...cutting it in half, taking a significant section out and putting it together...seems like something that would be ill-advised.

Yes, it can be done. I tried it once and know that it works. Just be sure the first time you use it that you have your life jacket on just in case it dosen't.

I think Crisco would work the best.....use regular - butter flavored is more fattening.
