We are moving around the Eastern US and about once a month I have to spend about an hour on the phone with AT & T to get things working again. The Air Card and Cell phones seem to have a life of their own. Is this a common Problem? They always get it fixed but it sure is a hassle. My truck has a built in Verizon phone and it always works.

I'm not impressed with AT&T coverage in the Mid-Atlantic area (phone, never had an AT&T air card). Verizon has the best coverage here (phone and air card).

What do they have to do to fix it ? Beyond of course wasting 15 minutes of your time...

Another thought ... Verizon has the *228 you dial when moving around to update programming. Does anyone know if AT&T has something similiar ?

Why don't you asked them what the problem is and what can be done to avoid it in the future?

I have never had this problem with either my AT&T phone or data card in many locations around the country.

Just an heads up on the *228. AT&T's phones do not need to have their programming updated. Due to the GSM system they use, no updates are required. Verizon and Sprint both need to have their roaming tables updated from time to time to pick up new sites.

ccna2000, et al: With Sprint and/or Verizon is the table update something that happens automatically or is there some action a customer needs to take to make it happen?

The other side of the coin:

When AT&T sells you "unlimited internet" they mean "Unlimited Internet"

T-Mobile.... Same thing

When Verizon sells you "unlimited internet" they mean something else entierly, Read the thread about the man suing Verision over his 9,000 plus bill cause he exceeded their unlimted limit

Kuma,

It is my understanding that these updates are done automatically, but on occasion the updates are not received by the phone. Turning the phone off and back on should get the updates also. It's a good idea to turn off any cell phone every day or so anyway. Just like a Windows PC, they need to be rebooted every now and then to clean up the mess. I work for a cell phone provider, can't say which one it's against company policy, and provide internal level 3 support for Blackberry and Windows Mobile devices. A lot of the time, just restarting the device will cure the problem you are having. As for the OP's problem, the next time you contact Customer Service, tell them this issue has gone on long enough and you want a new sim card or maybe a new phone/air card all together.

I believe AT&T has went the way of Verizon and others for all new customers of data cards. They have a 5GB monthly limit. Old customers are grandfathered and still have the "unlimited" data plan.

The reason is the bandwith hogs are crowding the system.

We have AT&T for our cell phone and our air card service. Our phone seems to need to be restarted to work correctly but then it's fine.
Our internet works great. We travel extensively and the only place where we have had problems is an area covered by an AT&T partner - northern California ,southern Oregon and parts of Idaho. We first ran into this two years ago and now we're back in the area and could not connect. Five bars but we couldn't get in. Hours on the phone. We finally found out that all we needed to do was update out communications manager. Now everything's working again. If you click on the "check for updates" under tools on the communications manager icon , it never says that there are updates. You have to go to the AT&T website and find the download page for communications manager and see if you have the latest version.
One thing I really like is the free high speed WiFi that we can get now at McDonalds and Starbucks. It's not needed in cities that have 3G but if you're in small towns as we often are it's great , especially if you need to download or upload a large file. You must have the latest communication manager to get onto the WiFi.
