We usually "camp" in our 27 foot trailer but in August, it'll be just DH and I picking up some new chairs and putting them into our empty van. We are planning to stay one night up near Seneca Lake (east side). I am wondering if any of you "real campers" can tell me a good camp site for tent camping. We've been to some of these state parks and the places look a bit buggy. Any suggestions are appreciated! Thanks.
We tent camped in that area two summers ago. We stayed at Watkins Glen SP but visited several of the other state parks in the area including Letchworth and a couple near Ithaca.
Overall, the parks were gorgeous. Many of the tent sites were very small or lacked the privacy/woodsiness that I like for tent camping. Others were really nice. PM me if you are interested and I can recommend some specific sites at Watkins Glen.
When we tented, Sampson State Park was our favorite. Watkins Glen is OK, too. I'm not sure what you mean by "buggy" (literally?) but really haven't found any kind of campground more or less buggy than any other in the area. At Sampson, avoid loop 6, otherwise known as the overflow - there is no restroom/shower in that loop and it'a a long hike to the next loop.
Thanks for the help. Well I survived my first tent camping experience. I have to admit I am very spoiled with my trailer, but it was a beautiful evening. We ended up staying at Sampson State Park in the overflow loop but it wasn't too bad! The other loops were filled and if this loop was filled, it would've been a bummer - very close together with very little trees. As it turned out, we found a spot away from other campers and with a beautiful view. We were only staying one night so having shade wasn't a big issue. There is a bathroom with showers down by the marina (some distance but not too bad) and it was very clean. Also, there are no fire pits but there are grassless spots where people have made fires and everybody had a fire going at night. Here's a couple pictures of our spot with a pretty view of Seneca Lake.
