Is there such an animal? Do any of you have one? How well does it do the job?

We are heading to Yellowstone via Colorado in a couple of weeks and I remember that Colorado has a few mountain that must be traveled over in order to get where we want to be. I remember Slumgullion Pass on the way to Lake City a couple of years ago where we started to smell brakes burning nearing the bottom of the pass. AND I was using the vaunted Ford tow/haul.

I've got a good friend that has one of the new Dodge 3500 Cummins 6.7 dually 1 ton pickups and it has an exhaust brake for slowing down the truck and trailer on mountainous terrain. Is there such a feature for the Ford?

I can already feel my rear end puckering just thinking about Monarch Pass!!!!!

Help!

Hi Joe,

I did a search in Google and yep, an exhaust brake for your F350 does exist. It looks like they were running around $1200-$1500. You should be able to find one locally at some of the pickup truck suppliers. Steve had a lot of Banks work done on his truck but I don't believe he had an exhaust brake installed. I think they just re-did his headers and exhaust and installed a K&N air filter. He had the work done somewhere in east Dallas county. He's on the road right now, if you want his cell number, PM me.

If you put the tansmission in Tow/Haul mode, start down a hill and hit the brakes to get you down to whatever speed you want, the tranny will hold you at that speed (unless you are going too fast for gravity).

The theory behind an exhaust brake on the 6.0L (and the Cummins 6.7, Ford 6.4 and . . .) is that you close off the exhaust to create maximum backpressure to the engine.

Ford does this with their variable vane turbochargers by closing the vanes and closing off the exhaust.

I'd give it a try before I went and paid $1500 for an extra that you may not need.

FWIW, My rig weighs right at 26,000 lbs and using the transmission braking in tow/haul, I can maintain 45 mph on a 9 mile, 7% grade without touching the service brakes after the first application to get the speed under control at the top of the hill. Rig is in my sig.

I don't think you'll need an exhaust brake if you'll use the Tow/Haul mode and let the system maintain your speed. Mine can get so slow that I have to use the accelerator to speed up going down the 6% and 8% grades in the area where I live and drive.

An exhaust brake is money well spent IMO. You've smelled the brakes so you know. Have a great trip.

As I think they said in "Blazing Saddles"..."We don't need no stinking exhaust brake!"

Ford F series diesel owner with Tow/Haul going over the infamous truck killing Tehachapi Grade here in SoCal! Using a light tap on the brakes every now and again.

"The TorqShift automatic transmission with tow-haul mode - Ford's advanced TorqShift transmission, now available on all Super Duty gas and diesel engines, offers a shift strategy specially designed for towing and hauling heavy loads. On downhill stretches, the transmission and engine work together to help control vehicle speed. Factors such as load, degree of hill climbed, temperatures, speed, and several dozen other factors are fed into the computer which selects from preprogrammed engine and transmission modes."

I wouldn't own a Diesel without one, but you can only lead a horse to water

One of the best options on the Cummins.. Glad I have one. Works better than letting the engine rev to the limiter on large grades.

I would try the tranny grade braking on your PSD/Torqeshift first. If your not satisfied with it speed reduction then as other PSD/DMAX owners do with max loads they add the EB later. Some don't like the max rpm's required for the grade braking feature on the PSD/Torqeshift tranny. The standard EB for the old 5.9 Cummins/PSD/DMAX has around 160-180 braking HP. The grade braking feature/variable vane turbo on the PSD/DMAX have around 120-130 braking HP according to aftermarket auto tranny rebuilders webs. The integrated variable vane turbo with sliding nozzle 6.7 Cummins has 240 braking HP.
Make your trip and see how you rig works for you.
