My ITouch just finished the upgrade process, took a little over an hour for my 8GB with 4GB used. No problems. It backed up all my data, installed the upgrade and then restored my ITouch to what I had before.

The only thing I had to do was rearrange the home screen icons back to my configuration.

I wonder whose hardware those servers run on?

Notice the Apple apologists remarks. "it's okay, it's a great problem to have, it's att's fault". I love these things. Myself, when I buy something, I expect it to work right away, not have to get up in the middle of the night to download the correct software. Also, why didn't the software come with it?

You are a bit confused. The software did come with it, the problem was in the activation process, not software. Which is where the AT&T glitch comes into play.

Now those who had purchased the ITouch earlier and wanted access to the new App Store did need to upgrade their firmware. But it was not required for basic operation of the ITouch. And that was a problem with the Apple servers (or lack of sufficiency thereof)

As I said earlier, the update probably could have been posted a day or two earlier to alleviate the load on the servers, but there was nothing that,ISTM, that couldn't have waited.

I guess I am confused. So you are saying that firmware isn't software. What is your description of firmware? Maybe it's a hard piece of something that gets sent over the internet line? If it's a piece of a coded program, it's software. Since the only company that can sell the Itouch or Iphone is Apple why wasn't that included with the phone? Apple knows what is needed because they put whatever it was/is on their servers.

No I'm not saying that. Here's the breakdown:

IPhone 3G -New and comes with all necessary firmware to operate and some basic application software. After purchase you activate through the carrier (AT&T). This process overwhelmed the AT&T servers which crashed and put a strain the Apple servers that partnered the process.

ITouch - not new, and at Rev 1.14 firmware. In order to run the new applications and access the APP Store, you need Rev 2.0 firmware which is downloaded through the Apple servers. The folks who just had to download 2.0 and play Monkeyball five minutes after release, put an additional strain on the servers that basically set up a DOS situation.

Apple brought more servers online and had the problem resolved by 2000 last night. (At least that's when I downloaded it with no problem). As I said, I think that Apple should have split the two releases, but that is not my call.

BTW, in my years of IT, firmware is "software" that is required for the basic operation of the equipment. Once you have that, then you can run the various application packages available which is known as software. So it's basically semantics. But whatever you wish to call it, the software was not the problem for the IPhone.

And that is why I'll stick with Nextel.

That is certainly your prerogative, although I have seen this same type of problem with other vendors as some have mentioned.

The lesson to be learned here (which others will have to learn the next timea new gadget arrives) is that, unless you absolutely have to have it, the release day is the worst time to buy.

Well I walked into the Apple store today after a bit of a wait and picked up the 16GB White iPhone - took 15 minutes once we got into the Store and it activated right away. They still had hundreds of iPhones left - they said that yesterdays problems with the AT&T registration servers had slowed down sales so they have plenty for today and tomorrow.

They had a problem converting my old iPhone account into a Family Talk account so I just set up a second account and walked down to the AT&T store and changed them - good thing was that the rollover minutes transferred to the new account and the old Iphone kept it's '200 text messages) that was part of it's original plan but not the new one - so it's a case of so far so good.

AT&T network is a bit iffy at the moment - when we get the signal it's much quicker than the old Edge system and tried some of the free Apps - most of which are garbage but a couple of useful ones in there. I'm sure people are going to dream up some really interesting apps over the next few months.

My major gripes so far are

1. Can't use the iPod features through a bluetooth headset - BT is for phone calls only
2. No car kit available from Apple - will have to see if I can find one from another supplier
3. No tethering so can't link it to a computer for use as a modem
