I would consider it more of a hybrid of Toyota and GM than just a Toyota rebadged. Each company had a hand. I believe GM did the styling and Toyota did some of the underpinning. I have an 05 Vibe AWD and it is an awesome car, but there are things I like a lot more in the Vibe than Matrix which lead to our purchase of it even though it was more money. GM and Toyota have been doing it for years and I think they have a good synergy in that car and the NUMMI plant. I know I haven't added much to the discussion, but I wanted to toss in my $0.02.

The reason for the first question is because I maid an error in punctuation. I had intended for the period to be a question mark. My bad. The reason for the title was that I thought it was more accurate than the actual articles title, "Toyota to Stop Making Tundras."
I have no agenda regarding Toyata Tundras. They're fine for what they are.

It seems my fingers no longer want to do my minds bidding. It's heck to get old. In the comment above, "maid" should have been "made."

Toyota isn't stupid. Where I work we would and have done the same thing if the demand isnt there. Think about commercial jets just sitting there without a home. It is simple economics. It goes down as inventory which means it can be taxed also. It isn't like they are ending the product line and I am positive that if a guy wants to get a Tundra, he will still have his pick of the litter.

Never had one, never want one. I like things built for 6 footers, not 5 (toyotas in general)! A lot of Tundras driven here in LA, but only a few by contractors.

I haven't owned a Toyota, they never had a Truck that would haul the load or tow a 5th wheel of the size we have. But if I wanted a 1/2 to Truck it would be a GM. As for Toyota being superior, thats a sad comment in this day and time. You better support our Big Three, do you realize what will happen if we lose the Big 3. GBY....

They are selling Pickups like crazy here in Australia..the 3 Litre Diesel variety. The Toyota Hilux was the best selling "car" two months ago in Australia, last month it was second.
I saw a black Hilux in a parking lot yesterday in the same parking lot was a F250 Diesel4x4 Extended Tray. I measured the length of both vehicles and the Hilux(as lifted as the Ford) was 3 ft shorter. I guess the "cars" here are getting bigger

I am amazed it took till today for this to get posted considering this was announced mid week.
1995brave wrote: The reason for the three month shut down is to move equipment between plants. San Antonio will be making the Tundras only, the other two plants will be making, i think MS the Highlander and IL plant will make the Previs by 2010.
Three months to move equipment? What are they moving? Wasn't San Antonio dedicated to the Tundra and able to build everything today? Or were there certain models that were only produced at Princeton? Even if that was the case, they could continue producing what they normally do in SA. The root cause isn't the location of the equipment, but supply out pacing demand. The article also says that production of the Tundra will stop next spring at Princeton, which means they will once again build product after the three month shutdown, so I doubt they are moving any equipment during that time.
Based on how normal shutdowns like this happen, I would assume that my companies JV that supplies several different products for the Tundra will stop the second Toyota does and will fire back up the second Toyota does. That is the joy of JIT.
According to what I have seen and heard, the Highlander will take the volume at Princeton and the Prius will be built at the new plant in Mississippi.
lesmore49 wrote: But what I like about Toyota is how fast they are reacting to this change and planing to build vehicles that are in demand-economizers- at these plants.
The domestics need to be able to shift as rapidly to changing conditions.
In this website, many have said that manufacturers can't change rapidly to changes in the economy, it takes to long with long term planning, factory set ups, etc....well Toyota just proved my point.
Quick or rapid is a relative term. When is the Pruis going to go into production here in the US? 2010 is what I read. How about the highlander? How soon will that be built at Princeton? These are two vehicles that Toyota produces today and just need to set up a manufacturing facility. It doesn't include all of the ED&D that goes in at the front.
The one thing I haven't seen anyone mention is that the three month shutdown includes the Sequoia production too.
