Those whole chickens you can buy hot at Costco etc. how safe is it to leave them out for an hours drive home. I see these chickens at the store and they are HOT and look good but we live an hours drive away. Do you leave them out or place them in a cooler and have all your ice melt. In the Summer we bring a cooler but we use it for the frozen foods we have purchased.

With the lid, I bet it will still be considerably warm when you get home. If you are the paranoid type, bring a small ice chest and a towel to tranport it home. Cover the chicken with the towel in the ice chest and I guarantee it will be serving hot when you get home.

Just take it home and eat it - it's not a big deal. You're being overly paranoid about germs. I do it all the time.

You could also buy one of the cheap, aluminum foil type bags that keeps food hot or cold. Don't remember what they are called, but are cheap and they work. It looks like an aluminum foil sack with 2 plastic handles. Bought mine at Wal-Mart.

Wrap it in aluminum foil and it will stay plenty hot enough to keep bacteria at bay.

Have you checked to see if they have cold chickens available too? The store where I shop has some of the same cooked chickens in the refrigerated case. I usually buy mine cold because I'm almost never eating it right away, so I figure it doesn't need to be warm to begin with...

I've always been on the leery side since I read about a couple who suffer food poisoning from roasted chicken they bought at a store.

If you put it in an insulated bag or soft side cooler by itself, it should still be pretty warm an hour later.

PROPERLY prepared food can be in the temp danger zone for 4 hours MAX . (40f-140f between these numbers is the danger zone) and longer and it should be discarded or reheated to an INTERNAL temp of 185f for 15 seconds, as after 4 hours bacteria can form to dangerous levels. dangerous foods (heavy in protein, meats,tofu) should also only be reheated ONCE then discarded after . shellfish that enters the danger zone SHOULD ALWAYS BE DISCARDED. anyway to your question about the chicken , yes for 1-2 hours you will be ok and long as it has been cooked properly at the market. (185 INTERNAL temp)
