Our little girl, Tootsie, is at the vets down in her back legs. the back bong is compressed and she has little or no control over her back legs. She acts like she knows us some what but she is definitely not herself. I hate to see her like this and I know she would be better off if I have her put to sleep. It is so tough to make that choice but it has to be done. It is really selfish of us to think she will come out of this and live another couple of years. I don't think a cart for her is the answer, what kind of live will she have? Having her on the other side playing and with no pain is better than watching her struggle and in pain.

Oh I am so sorry to hear this. The very same thing happened to us with one of our poodles. She was at least 12 when it happened. We had her put to sleep. She was so unhappy and confused.

Please stay with her when you do put her to sleep. We did not and I never forgave myself. I always stay with my dogs now.

It is hard to do the right thing, just do whatever you decide out of love for her.

I am so sorry th hear that. Please be kind to yourselves and Tootsie and do what you and the vet think is best. I would think you would have a decision soon about whether or not any recovery is possible. I will be praying for you all

I'm sure you've talked about the options and the chances for recovery with your vet. While dogs can sometimes live without neurological function in the rear legs, there are great problems with management. It is not just the matter of putting them in a cart. This is a very hard decision, our best wishes go out to you.

This is such a hard time for pet lovers. My heart goes out to you and your sweet little Tootsie. (I also have a dog named Tootsie)

My best advice after being in many different situations with seriously ill pets, is to weigh carefully all your options with your trusted vet and then give it all careful consideration. Think in terms of quality of life versus quantity and then allow your heart as well as your rational mind make your decision. As long as you do what you think is best for your little Tootsie, even if that means doing one final act of kindness, the one which is always the hardest of all things for a pet owner..... Then you will have fulfilled the promise you made to her when you brought her home. That is, to always do the very best you can for her, no matter what.

As you weigh your options and take time to consider what is best please know that there are a lot of people around here who care. You are in my thoughts & prayers. I hope you will come back for support & understanding... either way.

We are going through a similar situation with our Sheltie. She's got Kidney Failure, and there is nothing that can be done. Fortunately, she's not in pain, but won't eat much or drink. DW is now giving her IV treatments that the Vet recommended, but we know that she won't last much longer.

I'm out of town for another week, and she is trying to make her last until I get home. It isn't something she wants to do alone. I don't blame her.

As for your dog, what kind is it? Some times, you will read about small dogs that can be carried around, or those little carts for their back ends?? How old is your dog? Our Sheltie is 12 years old....had she been 6-7, we might have tried more, but she's also got very bad knees, and can't walk more than a few feet.

If she was in pain, it would be much easier to make the decision, as we do not want her to suffer. I'm sure that you are in the same boat, and are trying to base your decisions on similar things. Our Vet told us that it was just a short time until her Kidneys completely failed. We don't have a choice....and are just trying to hold off until I get home.

I would see what the Vet thinks you have for options, and then base them on what you can afford, what you feel is best for you dog.....NOT WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU! That is where it becomes hard!!

Good luck in whatever you decide....our thoughts are with you!

This is one of the hardest decisions a pet lover can make. My father always said a dog can be blind and deaf BUT a dog needs legs. I know you'll do the right thing.

I feel sorry for U...If I was sick, I'd surely like someone who loved me being able to put me out of my misery so Tootsie is lucky. To bad we humans can't be good to each other when we are deafly ill and just lying there suffering. I'm sure Tootsie would appreciate it but I feel for U and hope I never am in UR situation...Good luck.
