I have a friend with a small Honda EU2000i generator that he keeps in one of the basement storage bays. No big deal except that he also runs it while it's in there. He leaves the door cracked a bit and there's nothing combustible near it. He does it because it cuts down on the noise and he doesn't want to leave it outside if it's running while he's not there. He only uses it for charging the batteries while bookdocking.
He says he's never had a problem but it just doesn't seem right. It's a '99 Fleetwood Bounder. Is he going to come back to a burned-out shell of a motorhome one of these days?

Generators in any RV are required, by law, to be in a metal fireproof enclosure that is properly vented with an external exhaust pipe. What he is doing is very dangerous! He can get carbon monoxide fumes (the silent killer) inside the coach and the gasoline fumes can be ignited that will cause a major fire. Encourage him to cease the practice before it is too late!

This goes beyond generator police, it's just plain stupid. Remember the folks that died at Indy this year, from CO put out by other peoples generators that got into their rig. This is just plain nuts.

My question is what good is it going to do for us to discuss this over and over. It is up to this guys friend ( The OP ) to inform his friend how angerous it is. It isn't up to us because he probably doesn't even read RV.net and if he does he won't recognize that it's him that we are talking about.

No, he doesn't read this forum. He already knows it all. Incidentally, I misspoke when I said "friend." He's more of an acquaintance. I will pass this information on but I'm not going to hold my breath til he puts it in practice.

Well Mandolin.. I would "Hold my breath" if I entered his RV though... For reasons posted above
I have a properly installed Generator in my class A.. 2 hours and the CO alarm becomes very annoying... Unless I hook up the Gen-Turi, then.. Well, longest I've run Mr. Onan's contribution to my life is 25 hours, no beep beep beep

Outside of it being dangerous to people and animals in the RV, its not good for the generator. Why would someone want to buy a vary nice little generator like that Honda 2KW unit, then take a big chance of over heating it by running it in a box with the door cracked open? I have a 4KW Onan Micro Quiet, and I thought the little Honda's were quiet, as is?
To operate in an enclosed space, a generator needs to have its cooling air ducted in from outside, then ducted back out so the two dont mix, plus 100% of the exhaust should go outside, that Honda is not designed for that.
But dont take my word for it, ask Honda.
And this is true for all portable and contractor type generators.

Not only that, but if one looks at the built-in generators, the bottom of the compartment is open so that any leaks drip on the ground.
