We've got a new fiver on order and it comes with rain sensing Fan-Tastic Fans. Just wondering whether it is still desirable to instal Maxxair vents?? Obviously this would have the effect of making the rain sensor irrelevant but would also ensure ventilation during rain showers.
Anyone with experience out there who can comment?
Thanks

I just picked up my trailer last week and it too has the rain sensor vent and fan over the garage. I'm planning on installing a MaxAirII this Thursday. I wouldn't trust the rain sensor to close when it started to rain. I would much rather install a MaxAir, leave the vent open and not have to worry. Plus, I will be able to travel with the vent open when hauling toys.

Our fantastic fan with the rain sensor has worked perfectly for over 2 years. Note that you will have to get a cover that will allow the fan lid to open completly. The whole idea of the sensor was to allow the lid to close when it rains and it works. There are other vents to leave open when you are traveling.

We have the same fan and I put the Max air cover on that they make for the fan. Here is my reasoning. We sometimes want the fan to run even when it is raining, without a cover you can't do that so we installed the maxair cover for the fan. This is a different cover than the normal covers also fantastic fan says not to put a cover over their fan. You do see plenty of them with covers though. Maybe you will see them make their own cover soon.

I thought one of the postings stated that the rain sensor sometimes closed the vent on humid days. Can't verify that, however.
We have the covers and would highly recommend them and you will to on that first warm rainy day.

If you read the instructions that came with your Fan-Tastic Vent, it says: "Never place a Maxx-Air style cover over, or filter on ceiling fan. Greatly restricted airflow, increased sound levels and electronic component failures will occur." If you don't have the instructions, call their technical support at 1-800-521-0298 and ask them directly.

Thank you for all of that input. We got the answers we were expecting, except for the one from GSF. Thank you for that information, because it could be important. I'll call tech support tomorrow to get the scoop and I'll report back.

I have two of the Fantastic vents on our Newmar. You don't have to use a cover that will allow the vent to open all the way.
Both our vents will stop when the cover hits our MaxAir covers.
To check this out all you need to do is hold something over the vent cover that will stop it before it gets all the way open.
Having this feature allows you to use any cover that will allow air flow.

I called Fantastic Fan customer service several years ago and asked what problems might result from putting a MaxxAir cover (Model 800 - designed for high speed fans) over the fans. The woman I spoke with told me that a cover would make it more difficult to clean, but said she was not aware of any other problems, or fan failures resulting from such a cover. So, I put these covers over the 2 Fantastic Fans that we had in our Airstream at the time, ran them a lot for 3 years with no problems, and just this year have installed 3 of these same covers over the Fantasic Fans that we have in our new Newmar Kountry Air 5th wheel.
The benefits of these covers over the fans far outweighs any potential problems that we might incur in the future, and if we have to replace one or more of these fans at some point in time that would be a small price to pay in comparison to the alternatives - not being able to keep the fans going to cilculate air in inclement weather, including many days of high winds where we spend the summer in Montana when we would have to close the fans otherwise. (Just ask the guy who is staying near us now that had his Fantastic Fan vent cover blow off in a storm during the night 2 summers ago.)
