Does anyone out there have problems with changing climates from dry (AZ area to wet (say, Arkansas) area? When you travel from state to state do you have sinus problems?

Bill and I went to Sedona, AZ for a week this past month and after 2 days there he started getting a severe stuffy nose. He's always had allergies up until 3 yrs. ago when we started drinking a health drink that completely eliminated any allergy symptoms. Then this came on him and it won't go away.

Moved to Canyon Lake, Tx. (dry area) with kitty inside the 5'er on May 15th. He's never had a problem with the cat and had no stuffy nose for 5 wks. before going to Sedona. It all started in Sedona.

We came back, went to Houston to our daughters house for 3 or 4 days to pick up the grandkids and 1 night he sneezed about 150 times. Couldn't breathe. We've been there many times and have had no problems before.

Went from Houston to Canyon Lake and it continued. We came back to Arkansas to fix a leak at the house and he was outside working and his sinus's opened up. Then they closed up.

I read on Web MD that too dry sinus's can cause this, so I'm thinking of getting a humidifier. That's all that's left to do that I can think of. Anyone else out there have similar problems traveling around? What do you do? He's taking everything over the counter and nothing helps.

Oh, gosh. That is the frustrating part! Sometimes you can find a solution....and other times the allergies hit hard and stay with you -- no matter what.

I took Claritin for years and finally had to go see an ENT doctor for something new. Traveled frequently for work, so I was breathing all sorts of environments (airplane, hotel, offices, local pollen and pollution, etc.)

Now using a prescription nose spray that has finally worked at clearing up my major sinus headaches!

Wish you luck. It is a tough battle.

I now take Clariton year round.

I actually buy it in Mexico.

Knock on wood I have not been sick for about a year now.

In the past everytime we would move to another part of the Country I would get sick with allergy problems. So far this has taken care of my allergy problems.

Good luck.

Hi Linda,

I haven't had Allergies in over 40yrs that is until this year. This is my 25yr in AZ. My Doc said something bloomed in AZ that started late March that normaly doesn't bloom here. He stated 90% of his patient load has complained about Allergies this year.

It took me over two months to get back to somewhere normal but it's still bothering me on some mornings. I'll sure be glad when winter gets here.

Another problem we have here is called Valley Fever from some bug that lives in the soil. It feels like your gonna die then leaves behind a silver dollar sized spot on your lung then is gone forever (not the spot). There's no help for it other than time. If your Doc see's a spot on his lung x-ray, don't worry too much as 10 to 1, it's a Valley Fever spot and is harmless.

Wow, I have a friend in Phoenix who has never had allergies in the 6 years she's lived out there. This year she had to start taking allergy meds in March and April, too.

Even our "healthy" friends who have never been affected are joining the bandwagon. Sorry to hear this. Truly. Don't wish this on anyone.

When I go from MD to FL, the pine pollen gets me. I alternate between Claritin and Zyrtec (about 15 days on one, then switch to the other)...and it does help. Also have found nasal rinses help alot (this especially after I've been mowing the grass). Frequent face washing helps.

And, a humidifier does help - I use one primarily in winter, but if I'm stuffed up, it helps in summer too - with the AC.

Moving to another area can also trigger an allergic response as sometimes the allergy you have could be to something that isn't found normally where you live and you wouldn't know about the allergy. That is until you go to an area where they have it - and BAM!

I never had a single allergy my whole life - till I went to Idaho for a family member's wedding and was so miserable! About 20 minutes after sitting on the plane to return home - I finally felt better than I had in the last 4 days. Turns out that year that Idaho had a highest pollen count on record. I apparently had an allergy to something that isn't found where I live but going up there it "triggered" it and from then on I now have allergies down here now too.

Allergies can run in cycles - you can have bad attacks a year or so and then they will lessen the next couple of years and then go back up - the hill and valley effect. Also, when something "triggers" an allergy - i.e. something in Sedona, then your body is forced to work overtime and is stressed trying to produce the histamines to counteract the allergy and it takes awhile for the body to stop and return to normal. What allergy drugs do is stop the production of those histamines and allows the body to "equalize".

Zyrtec is good for all kinds of allergies and can now be bought over the counter. Claritin did nothing for my seasonals whatsoever so I was switched to Zyrtec and found amazing relief. I've been able to narrow down what my allergy is so I can "plan ahead" as the season (i'm allergic to pine, birch, magnolia and oak pollen - so springtime and bloom season is worse for me but is wanes by the time June comes around and i'm no longer affected. The old pollen being blown around in the fall isn't as potent so it doesn't affect me as much).

Have him try the Zyrtec. If it doesn't help in a week or so, he might need something stronger to halt the reaction of his system to whatever it was he was exposed to in Az.

Good luck. allergies can be miserable!
