Greetings,
My family and I are planning to trip to Yellowstone in Aug. What would you suggest to see at Yellowstone and the surrounding area? What attractions should be avoided? Thanks

The main things to avoid are annoying the wildlife, destroying their habitat and getting eaten by a bear See and do as much as you can and have a great experience. The drive to the northeast entrance and surrounding area is well worth the trip.
Oh, and avoid the tourists who are bent on doing any of the first three.

Not sure how old your kids are so don't know if they are up to a longish hike but when we were there last August (we spent 3 weeks there) we really enjoyed taking a day hike up Mount Washburn. There is a ranger station at the top of the mountain where we ate our lunch. We are in our 50's and the couple with us in their 60's and we didn't find it to be a particularly difficult hike but we did take 5 hours from start to finish including the lunch break.
If that seems too long, then a shorter hike is Elephant Back which is fairly close to Fishing Bridge RV Park.
Don't miss the Yellowstone Canyon.

try to take in one or two of the ranger talks... the ones they have around a campfire in the evenings.

Thanks all for your insight and time. Our daughter is 16 so the hike should be good.

We were there 2 summers ago. Drove our Sigthseer around to most of the sights to see. We found adequate parking where ever we went. There are a few sights were large vehicles are prohibited. Using our MH made it more comfortable for all of us. We had food readily available. A restroom with minimal waiting. A bed to take a nap. Windows to look through and view wildlife while a thunder storm passes by. The kids and I went horseback riding while DW relaxed in the MH.
RElax, drive safely, and enjoy God's creations (you'll see a lot at Yellowstone).

A trip to the swimming area on the river would be fun. I can't remember exactly where it is, but it's a spot where warmer water meets the cold river. I think it's on the Firehole Canyon Drive. I'm sure people at the campgrounds can help you locate it.

Go to the Yellowstone NP website and check out what they have. We found that the best time to see the most popular sites was early in the morning before the crowds arrive. We have pictures of Old Faithful with no other people standing in the background.
We stayed a week so we were able to get in lots of sightseeing.

Order up the "Yellowstone Ultimate Trip Planner" here
We did, and it has a lot of great info, maps, DVD, CD, and other stuff. We are arriving July 27th at Bridge Bay CG for a 12 day stay.
Hope that amount of time in-park will allow for an in-depth experience of all the major attractions there.
