... can you retract it manually?

In our walk through I was told that mine has no manual backup ...but that "really there's nothing to fail". I've got a ton of literature on the new unit (none that is helpful yet) and I will be looking through it. I may also contact the manufacturer.

But I am looking for info here. My electric slide never failed... but if it did I could still get it in to take it to be fixed. The hydrolic is very nice... fast, smooth, quiet. But I can find plenty that could fail! A hose could burst, a fitting could leak, the pump itself could fail, and even if I could patch a leak that lost too much fluid...

I can only imagine being in the middle of no where with the slides stuck out, trying to figure out where to get parts to repair the hydrolics, then needing to GO there (leaving the RV in...? a rest stop?) This won't fly.

What could I do or what can I change so I won't be exposed to this risk?

if you remove the hydrolic lines to the rams you could push it back in some how but you would have a mess of oil on the ground and probably need some kind of jack and blocks to completely close it and block it so it doesnt slide back out.

There is a manual over-ride with a crank handle.

My hydraulic slide got stuck in the out position a couple months ago.

I did not have the instructions for mine, so I wasted a lot of time figuring it out.
Turned out that the return solenoid was stuck.
I was able to swap lines and retract the slide.

I would be surprised if your slide does not have a manual backup in case of failure of the mechanism and more surprised hearing that your dealer said there is no need for one. In some units, there is a hole in the side of the unit where a long-handled crank is placed to "wind your slide in or out". In mine ( Keystone Cougar), there is a manual crank (operated by a ratchet) underneath the unit. Not sure who invented this system but I pray that my slide never fails to work normally. Unlike yours, mine is electrically operated so all I need to happen is a dead battery and I am hooped. My suggestion to you would be to (a) find where the manual crank is; and, (b) find out how it works.
Should your slide ever fail, phone your dealer and tell him to come fix it!

The Challenger we had, you could use an eletric cordless drill and 1/4" hex head, insert into the end of the pump and run the hydralics.

mine has a manual hand pump just like a hydraulic bottle jack, located next to the motor. just twist a little valve closed and start pumping the handle and all the slides go in.

That's how our Wildcat (and I'm guessing most Forest River products) work also.

I have a brand new (1 week old!) Wildcat that has the hydraulics as well. Its in the driveway with the slides out so I can check everything out. I was reading the ton of material the dealer gave me because I got the same song and dance when I asked about hydraulic failure. "oh you will need another person to push the slide in, it will take a lot but you can do it." Same thing on the A&E electric awning, "if it breaks when extended there is nothing you can do...."
Ok service guys! Why dont you read the manuals for some of these components you sale!?
A few posts stated to use an allen wrench and electric drill. This will work as long you go in the correct direction
There should also be a "rack and pinion" type mechanism under the slide out, at the end of this rack and pinion there should be a place to hook a crank so you can retract the slide-out. I didn't get one from the dealership but I believe that you can order one from the manufacturer (I vaguely recall reading this in the owners manual..

Hope this helps!? FYI, I haven't even had mine out on its first trip yet!!! Spend a lot of time just sitting in it flipping through catalogs and reading on these forums.

Enjoy!
