Most campgrounds we have stayed at will refill them. Although we usually camp at KOA's and Yogi Bear campgrounds. I'm not to sure about other campgrounds.

Those are the cadillacs of camp grounds.

One thing to consider is the growing instance of methamphetamine manufacturers using exchange propane tanks to put ammonia in and then, when they are done with the tanks, return them for an exchange. Remaining ammonia in the tank can be dangerous, if not deadly. I will never do an exchange again.

Propane supply companies (Suburban for ex.) will also do propane refills. Many truck stops, hardware stores will also do refills.

If you can find 'metered propane' refills, that's the cheapest vs. flat rate for a 20# tank.

I like the local U-Haul cause they have metered refill service so you pay for what you need only and you are using your own tank instead of worrying what some else has used your tank for

Up here in Minnesota, I would say that about 1 in 5'ish? Gas stations will refill. I'm guessing that it's not as common in your neck of the woods though. When your driving by gas stations in your area, just look for a big tank (Usually behind or next too the station.)

Hey CosmicVagabond, there's an interesting article about the meth issue on Snopes.com:

http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/methtank.asp

The bottom line is that it isn't that big of an issue for propane tanks. It's pretty obvious when a tank has been filled with ammonia and the people who are doing it aren't likely to draw attention to themselves by returning such a tank for exchange. The other consideration is that since it would be obvious that the tank was abused, the dealer wouldn't be likely to put such a tank back into circulation if someone did bring one back.

You still might not want to use an exchange service, but I thought you might like to see the article anyway.

Tanks over 40 lbs do not have OPD valves. Then again, I don't know of any RVs that have a 100 lb tank. (maybe Prevost)

I get my tanks filled at the local AGWAY Farm and Feed Supply store. You buy it by the pound. I have dual tanks without an automatic switch over device so when I do get a tank filled it is always 20 lbs depending on who is reading the scales.
