Hi Fellow Rv'ers, I am about to pop for a surge protector but of am of course worried about theft. Does anybody know if there is a high theft rate of these devices and does the locking device protect the surge guard or is it pretty much worthless?

We've been using our surge protector for close to 5 years now and have never had a problem with theft. I guess there could always be the first time, but so far we've been lucky.

Depending on the surge protector you can find a plastic coated metal one at CW. We got one with the surge protector due to the price and other posts on thefts that have occurred.

I bought a lock because the guy camping next to me one time had his stolen and recomended I get one. Always better to be safe than sorry for an item that costs more than a couple bucks to replace.

Most of the CG's have a closable box into which you plug the converter. You could put a little lock on the box. Or, even better, if you really want to do a good job get a hard wired protector and put it inside the camper.

I got a simple two piece lock hasp from CW that fits over the plug. I got a combination lock for it and feel secure about leaving it set up when we are away from the tt. I'm just not comfortable leaving stuff around the camp site when we are away. If someone wants to steal something they will probably figure out a way to steal it, I would rather have them move on to the next guy who didn't bother to make it inconvenient or difficult for them to steal it.

Why not get one that hard-wires in, inside a compartment or the coach? They are cheaper than the portable (plug-in) types and far more secure.

I am about to buy a: Progressive Surge Protector and just wire it into the interior space where the power cord is kept.

Another reason to go for the hard-wired version. I've installed 5 of them now, and most installations are pretty easy. I've also removed them when I've sold the coach and either reinstalled the same unit in the next coach or sold it. BTW, I have a really nice 50A unit . . .

Besides, the hard-wired units cost less anyway. The difference was enough to pay to have someone install the one in our DP.

Our latest one is the Progressive. IMO it has the best features and it's the most compact.
