I really don't know where to put this because it is NOT RV related, but IS travel related. Hope this is the right spot.
We are thinking of flying to Eugene, OR. (cheap cause we have a family member with the airlines) then catching an Amtrak train up to Vancouver (very cheap - around $100), then taking an Alaskan cruise, then fly back to San Antonio, Tx. from Vancouver. Anyone out there have any info. that would be of help to us or anyone every ride Amtrak and have comments? Any Alaskan info. would be a GREAT help. Thanks!

Sounds like a great trip! My step father just road Amtrak from Salem to Seattle...he said the trip was great and he sure enjoyed just sitting back and relaxing instead of dealing with traffic.
Have a great time!

Amtrak is great but notoriously unreliable with scheduling. Often it will be right on time. But as many times can be hours behind schedule so make sure you have plenty of time between flights and trains. It is not unusual to get canceled completely because of rail problems.

You can also take a roundtrip Alaskan cruise out of Seattle. Are you planning on some time in Vancouver? If you fly from YVR (Vancouver) to home, it is not a domestic flight while out of Seattle, for you would be a domestic flight. The price is quite a difference. Your cruise from Seattle on the Princess Line (done that) is quite nice. Have been to AK on the following cruise lines: Princess, Holland America, Celebrity, and Norwegian.

My mother in law complained about the schedule. Freight trains get a priority.

Can't help you with the Amtrak question, but we did the Alaska cruise a couple of years ago, and have one bit of advice......TAKE JACKETS! We went the end of June and beginning of July and had to buy jackets at our first port o' call. It was cold the whole trip. Also, whatever jackets you take, make sure they are waterproof, because it rains or drizzles constantly in southern Alaska. Other than that, you will have the time of your life there.

Hi Linda:
Sounds like a great trip. An Alaska cruise is wonderful. I would just add to allow plenty of travel time. Fly one day and take the train the next. Flying is exhausting nowadays. Don't know if you are flying standby but that is a hassle too. Take the train to Vancouver the next day. The ship won't wait if you have travel delays.

Thanks to all who posted - it's a big help. Yes,Kbix I agree on allow plenty of travel time. We will be flying standby and will allow an extra day for that just to be sure we make it on time. Flying home is no problem - we won't have to make any connections. We have some timeshares that we can trade in on a cruise, so that's a 'already paid for' thing.
Pumpkin Sue: Freght trains own the rails and that's why they get priority. A friend of mine just did it and her 32 hr. trip took 39 hrs. So we'll be getting a sleeper probably.
parametric: We will be flying NW on standby non rev status and they fly out of Vancouver - price won't be the problem - availablity will. Could you tell me which cruise line you preferred and why? I really need this info.!
MichDoc: Yes, we know about the jackets - I have a fur that I hardly ever wear that I'd love to take, but it's too pretentious for one thing and too heavy for another. Waterproof it ain't, but if that fox got wet, his fur won't be hurt if it got wet on an Alaskan cruise I don't think. Sure wish I could take it.
EarlE: Thanks, we'll keep that in mind!
Thanks all!

Linda: My husband is retired from an airline and I would suggest if you are flying standby to allow two days to fly just incase you can't make it.
Also we have been on 25 cruises and I can tell you we prefer Celebrity and Holland. Royal Caribbean we also like. Princess is okay. Service may be best on Holland America because of their wonderful Indonesian staff.
Hope this helps.
