I'm sure that this question has probably been asked and answered a hundred times, so her goes 101. We have a 2005 jeep wrangler (manual)and when we tow it has miles added on. How do we keep this from happining?
Thanks in advance for any help that you can give.

maybe take the front wheels off the ground or the back wheels, not sure which side registers the mileage.

You tow it in neutral, or is the 4WD crankcase in neutral? Surprised it accumulates miles. If it is electronic odometer, could find the fuse and remove that when towing, but you would lose station presets.

Where do you have the ignition turned to? It should be in the "OFF" steering wheel unlocked position.

Wow, mine is a 01 with auto and never had the problem.
I would take it to a Jeep dealer, something has to be wrong.

I tow a 1999 and 2005 JGC. Neither has added mileage to the odometer when towing.

I believe if you have everything set according to the manual, you should not be accumulating mileage. Double check that you have the key at first click, transfer case in neutral.

Jeeps with electronic odometers should not record mileage when ignition switch is properly positioned for towing.
Start with the ignition switch in the "locked" position. (key removed, dash indicators, radio, etc are "off", steering wheel locks up when turned)
Insert key. Turn to the right (clockwise) to the 1st detent position. You can feel this. Steering will become unlocked, dash indicators remain "off", key cannot be removed. If you turn too far to the right, the dash indicators (and other electrical items, including odometer) will come "on". Key remains in ignition switch while towing.
It is very important that steering wheel is unlocked when towing 4-down. This is accomplished with switch in the 1st detent position, which unlocks steering wheel without energizing electrical circuits. JFG and Ric are correct.

Sounds like it's being towed with the tranny in neutral but not the transfer case. You need to have the transfer case in neutral.
