Celebrating our 35th Anniversary and thought it might be nice to go to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and spend some time around Mackinac Island and Tahquamenon Falls. Live in Michigan but haven't been to the U P in quite some time. We are used to camping in anything from State Forests (no hook-ups) to places that have full hook-ups. The one thing I do prefer is large campsites (don't like what I consider parking lot camping ~ on top of each other) Can anyone lead me to a nice campground with lots of trees and large sites? Has anyone ever camped at Tahquamenon Falls State Park? Thanks for your input!
P.S.
Clean bathrooms or outhouses is another preference.

We didn't stay there, but I know there is a campground to Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

Been along time since I've been up there too. Have thought about going back this summer, but changed plans to stay in Petoskey. Anyway I know there is a KOA in Newberry which is close to to the falls. Maybe do a search here and see if anybody has stayed there before. You can go to the KOA website, the pictures look pretty nice, at least that would be a start.

We are also looking into a couple other options. Possibly taking the Agawa Canyon Train and staying in a campground around Sault St. Marie for a little while. So any great campgrounds or ideas will be welcome. Thanks again for your input.

Sounds like you might like Breevort Campground in the Hiawatha National Forest about 20 minutes west of St. Ignace just off of US2. Sights are large, there are flush toilets but no electricity.
Just be sure you are in the national forest campground, not the state forest campground near by. It's sites are very small.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park is a very nice place. There are campgrounds at the lower falls (modern) and 2 campgrounds at the Rivermouth site. One is modern but the other is rustic with vault toilets. Some good sized sites right on the river.
Sounds like you want to be in the UP more then in Mackinac City. In MC I would recommend Mill Creek but stay out of the full hookup "bridge view" parking lot section. They have some very large sites that are electric/water only. Straits SP is very nice but check site size depending how big you need. That would be a good place to stay for a couple days if you plan to go to the Island and stuff.
I personally love Lake Muskallongue SP but it's north of Newberry and the fall about 30 miles and right on Lake Superior. Might be a bit out of your way.
Brimely State Park is between the Fall and the Soo and might be a good base of operations for all that stuff. Also the Casino's around there have some RV spots as well.

My favorite park for escaping the summer heat and getting away (a long way away) from civilization. It is convenient to Tahquamenon Falls, but not much else.

After reading the post about KOA just before reading this one I would have to recommend the KOA in St. Ignace. They have large sites, reasonable prices and close to the ferries. The St. Ignace area is not as commercial as the Mackinac City area. I still haven't found a CG that I like in Mackinaw City. We liked the SP at Tahquamenon Falls. There are a couple of good CGs in Sault Ste. Marie, MI that are on the river so you can see the boats out your RV window. We have taken the Agawa Canyon train many times but it is a long ride. I would suggest taking your own sandwiches & beverages (non-alcoholic) because they are expensive and have a poor choice on the train.

you can't go wrong with the tahquamenon falls state park, we did the same exact trip you speak of last year and had a great time. We stayed in the lower falls campground and had a nice site right on the river, the bathouse was new and clean, there is a nice store there between the 2 camping loops they sell souviniers and ice cream, you can rent a row boat and row out to the lower falls and explore up close, I highly reccomend that. Down the road at the upper falls there is microbrewey\restaurant that we enjoyed. Tahquamenon falls is about 10 miles from Paradise Mi and maybe 15 miles from Newberry, The shipwreck museum at whitefish point is also close by and worth a look. It took us about an hour to get to the train station in su st marie, I was a bit disappointed in the train trip, mostly all we saw was brush, no animals and it took all day long to do the 100 mile trip, they gave you about 90 mins or so to get out and explore the park and then you head back. I highly recommend staying at the falls.

Straits State Park in St. Ignace is a great campground. They have sites that back up to the beach. Some times there are fireworks on the LP side of the straits, which are visible from the UP side at the state park. The sites have electric and water. Good location to Mackinac Island ferries, and a reasonable day trip to Tahquamenon.
