It's Windows AntiVirus 2008, and yes it is a bona-fide virus. If you have Windows Defender, it'll be in the software list, and you can use that to remove it and delete the protected file.

If not, you can get it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx

I got that windows antivirus 2008 on my main machine last week along with possibly some others. It got to the point where I had to disconnect the machine, set it aside and pull out my back-up unit just so I could get back online and in business.

My main machine is still infected and I'm not sure how to proceed short of yanking the hard drive and taking it somewhere for data recovery at least.

My browser was hijacked to the point that I cannot get to any websites to download anything that might help the situation.

lyman....Thanks for the info. Tried that and it didn't seem to work.....but then I did try Spybot which is also a free download and it got rid of of the 2008 virus.... but when I went to start up I still got the blue screen announcing spyware....but according to mcafee and spybot theres no virus or spyware left on the computer, now if I could get rid of the message and the blue screen....still workin on it though.....thanks again....rick

There is another new virous out called the Amish worm.Since the Amish don't have computers you have to delete you files yourself.
Now to get serious,I had it , and AVG free cleaned it out for me. You might try them . You can download it for free at grissoft.com. If you decide to use it , you will have to look the web site over real close to find the free download. They hide it real well. Guess they arent selling enough to suit the stock holders.

I just went back and looked and here is the website with the free version. Forgot that I'd bookmarked it. Go to the big white sguare that saws free and click the dwnload button the ones acroos the top will try to get you to pay. The free one is almost identical it will update automatically and let you set a day and time to scan you'l find those items in the tools section . A computer guy from caltran siced me onto it and he says it's as good as or better than Norton or macafee. I forgot to put in the website it's clickable AVGFREE

There's also Antivirus 2009 (a variant of 2008), which presents the same way.

Manual removal of Antivirus 2009:
Antivirus 2009 Manual removal means that you have relevant skills for managing .dll files and PC registry. After you remove Antivirus 2009 manually (in case you have choisen this way of Antivirus 2009), we still highly recomend you due to the reasons explained above to perform free scan for malware. Follow the links in the article to perform the free scan.

Delete Antivirus 2009 files:
av2009.exe

shlwapi.dll
wininet.dll
Antivirus 2009.lnk
Uninstall Antivirus 2009.lnk

Delete Antivirus 2009 registry entries:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Antivirus
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Antivirus
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\”Antivirus” = “%ProgramFiles%\Antivirus 2009\Antvrs.exe”
