I'm having a problem that several of you I bet are also having. I get about 50 emails a day and I'm retired so only a few every other day or so are actually mails that I want and are from someone that I know.
Once in a while I take the time to check for a link at the bottom of the email so I can unsubscribe and at least be done with one of the senders but I have been doing this for what seems like years and still I have so many junk emails that I miss ones from people that I know because they hide among all the junk.
Someone told me that by clicking on the unsubscribe in an email I'm actually telling them that this is a good email address and they will send me even more and sell my address as a confirmed address and I get even more from other parties.
Can someone help me with a way to stop all the junk. I have filters set pretty high and some of the junk mail gets caught but not nearly enough.
Thanks very much!!!!!

Whatever spam gets through your filters, mark it as junk and delete it. NEVER click on the "unsubscribe" link, what you have been told is true.

Thanks for the quick response. I have deleted a lot of mail but it seems like after a few days of not checking my mail their is just too much to sort through and is overwhelming to say the least.
Thanks again,

Your only alternative now is to change your email address and give it to only the people you actually want to communicate with. And....like mentioned above, never...NEVER.....click onto any part of any junk email, that only verifies that the address is a good address and now it will be sold to more spammers. Its the price we pay for something thats virtually free and so easy to use.

Roy,
I'm no expert but on my msn account I have the filter set fairly high. The only messages I get in my inbox is from those people in my email address list. The rest automatically go into my junk mail folder. I'm not quite sure how I set that up, but you may want to go into your personal settings on your internet/email provider and muck around to see if there are additional barriers that you can take advantage of. You may have to setup a junk mail folder. I have a heading in that that I can click on if I suspect that it is a phishing scam as well. I use that a lot!! Don't seem to remember seeing too many of the same type come through. However, the fake rolexes and cheap viagara still get into the junk folder!! Most of those spam messages are computer generated anyway. As stated earlier, don't unsubscribe to any of them!
Good luck

if you have vista you can click on message at the top of the page and scroll down to junk mail and block the domain of the sender. takes time but you will not get anything from them again.

Sign up for a free Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo mail account. They all have spam filters that will flag most spam messages and put it in a folder and deletes the bad mail after 30 days.
Send out your new email address to the people you want to have it and allow them time to start using your new address. After a while you can monitor your new email address and stop using the old one. An additional benefit is if you switch internet providers you take the free account with you and your email continues to come into your free account.
A benefit or problem with free accounts is that your email and email addresses reside on their computer and not yours. Some people have a problem with that and won't use free accounts. I have been using hotmail and gmail for a number of years now and don't have any plans to go back to outlook express or anything like that. I prefer the gmail account since you can search on your emails stored for a key word and find all emails that match the word.

AOL was always the worst. I would even place a bet that AOL itself was selling email addresses.
I have a Yahoo and really no problems in a long time.

Download Mail Washer Free. It allows you to blacklist bounce and delete all unwanted emails before you open your email account. Google (Mail washer 1.33) you need to hurry it is the only one still free since Norton bought the others out. It is easy to setup. It remembers all the blacklisted and the friends senders. I have been trying to burn it to disk for about 3 hours today with now luck. I will take some advise on burning it to disk. I have used it for about 6-8 years now. Very few unwanted emails now.

One thing Lapdog didn't mention about Gmail and Yahoo that may be important to some people, they both have pop3 and SMTP email servers. I think you may have to pay a small annual fee for Yahoo Pop3 service but Gmail Pop3 service is free. What this means is that you can use programs like Outlook or Outlook Express for your email client if that is your preference. These programs can be configured so that your email remains on the server even after you download it to your computer. Configured correctly, this can provide a pretty good backup position if anything should happen to your computer.
Me thinks Lapdog may have gotten it right this time.
