I am NOT saying this as fact just a question. On a recent camping trip a person told me not to use china made cast iron because of lead content. With all the lead in toys it made me wonder. I was just wondering if this was just a myth or if it had merit. Have you heard this or not?

Our's are all USA, and they've performed for decades. Amortized, they're the cheapest cooking ware we own.

I guess us Americans will never learn. The toys that were made in China had lead paint and Mattel apologized to the Chinese for the news media telling the American people that the children were in danger of lead poisoning. Yet we keep buying the garbage made in China. In the 60's and 70's it was the Japanese but we were to stupid to stop buying the garbage and look what has happened. The CEO's in this country should be taken out and hanged along with all of us that continue to buy this foreign garbage. I will get off of the soap box now.

Maybe we should have this page moved to a general topics page (Around the Campfire?) -- I would like to ask this question ---

Has anyone figured out how to NOT buy stuff made in China? I try -- and then I find out that even old American companies (ex. Nesco) are now making their stuff in China.

How do we avoid that? Honestly -- has anyone found a way?

Thanks.

Not really, it is difficult. When we had a discussion on Dutch Ovens it wasn't popular to suggest that people buy Lodge ovens made in Tennessee.

You can thank Uncle Sam for this one. A couple of years ago Congress passed a bill, after much heavy duty lobbying by American manufacturers and retailers, that makes it quite advantageous to get their products made in China. It was part of a trade package that we gave the Chinese.

I've been around foundries for 32 years. There is no lead in iron and I'm sure it won't mix in the casting process.
I have a number of Chinese pieces and in fact some cook better than the US pieces. NOW understand I would much rather buy American but not everything is made here that I wanted.

I've made a post similar to this one in the past and gotten flamed so please be gentle.

We use all Camp Chef products. Yes, they are made in China. However, Camp Chef IS an American Company, as are the retailers that sell them. Buying something "made in China" does not necessarily mean that you are not supporting American companies.

I've yet to find a difference in quality between Camp Chef and Lodge.

Yes, there ARE cheaply made "made in China" Dutch ovens and it's quite obvious that they were cheaply made. The cast is bad, they're pitted, the lid doesn't fit properly, etc. BUT, I've NEVER seen that in any Camp Chef ovens, and I've probably seen more new Camp Chef ovens that most folks on this forum.

We made a decision to deal with Camp Chef because the folks in our area simply cannot afford the Lodge ovens. We carry a superior oven at a reasonable price. Our goal is to simply get more folks involved in Dutch oven cooking. If the ovens are too expensive, folks aren't even going to think about Dutch oven cooking (if they haven't caught the bug yet), because the products are too expensive for their budget.

Like I said, be nice, please!

Julie
