I lost my awning last weekend in perfectly calm weather.

We were about 100 feet away at our friends trailer for several hours and it was getting late so we walked back to our trailer. When we got to our trailer and the awning was gone. Even worse, the door to get in the trailer was missing! The weather all day had been very calm, no rain and just a little bit of a breeze. The humidity was high and so was the temperature, so we spent the day outside in the shade, drinking a few cold ones. So if there was any sort of wind we would have known.

It was at that time I realized I had a few too many beers and I was standing on the wrong side of the trailer. After walking to the other side of the trailer, I found that the awning and door was still there.

I hate it when the door disappears! Glad your awning was still attached more firmly than your grasp of reality! LOL

Best advice I got about awnings was from the gentleman who walked me through my PDI when I bought my first new motorhome: "If you're not under your awning, roll it up".

Same here. Our awning only gets deployed when we're going to use it and when we're done - back up it goes.

My advice is to get a awning strap and screw it into the ground with the auger type stake. Run it up to the crossbar, loop it around same then run it across the front of the awning. Loop it around the other crossbar then hook it to a auger type stake with a spring hooked between the awning strap and stake to give it some play. This will keep your awning safe in all but the worst winds. I also dip mine down on one end before going to bed if rain is expected. Use your awning strap every time it only takes a few minutes to hook up and will save you a lot of money.

I just lost my awning on Sunday night. Thing that sucks is that my trailer is on a seasonal site 75 miles away so I got the call while I was at work and had to leave to go cut the awniing off the trailer.

First thing I did was call the insurance company. Trailer is only 3 months old......

SSport, no disprespect, but do I understand that you were 75 miles away and your awning was out?

Yes, it's actually normal for seasonals to do. That's one of the main reasons the arms can be disconnected from the trailer and bolted to a deck. my parents have been doing it for over 25 years and have never had a problem. Everything was strapped down correctly but I believe our center support was defective and failed which caused the rest to come down.

These stories give me the willies!

We have it pretty easy out in California. Wind doesn't usually just appear... we tend to have plenty of notice.

Out in the desert or from the midwest on east it can be a big surprise.

Wow there must be a bunch of those “microburst” happening now days. On June 22nd, we were in a park in northern Indiana. Our friends who were camping about 5 sites down from us invited us over for brunch. We were only gone maybe 60 minutes on a beautiful sunny & humid late morning when one hit our awning. I was lucky it just ripped the fabric off the tube, even though we had 2 (each side) De-Flappers on it. I turned it into the insurance, and my dealer is replacing it. I never let the awning out if we are not there, but I just didn’t even think to put it away…

Yup, they're in Florida as well. Our's disappeared in the blink of an eye. Unfortunately, it left a trail of punctures as it disembarked. In our case it was only 1 of 12 incidents of bad luck.

Hmmmm - maybe I won't worry about bothering someone to help me find the awning strap that rolled up in the awning - AGAIN!
