Has anyone heard about dogs training themselves to a litter box?

I have had Cassie for 3 years. She is a rescue mutt. About 20lbs. She does not like the heat altho she likes to lay in the sun on a cool day. She is fully potty trained.

For the past week, she has refused to go outside until 5 or 6 in the evening. No piddle or poopies in the house. BUT - - Ying and Yangs litter box is overflowing with piddle clumps every day. Way too much for 2 young cats.

Does 2 plus 2 equal 4 here?

I am not an expert (others will answer soon I am sure), but my mom's dog was trained as a puppy to go out to the screened balcony and use the newspapers set up for him.

Because of health issues, my mom cannot always walk down the long stairs to take him on walks...so she put papers in a round metal pan from Lowes(the size that water heaters sit in). No worries. It's just like cleaning up a cat's litter box.

Anyway, it was handy when it rained for 2 days during a hotel visit. He was perfect and used the papers in the bathroom that we set up for him.

So...yes, your dog may have decided it was a handy solution.

p.s. the other answer would be that one of your kitties may have a problem the vet could help with.

Maybe.

But I think the more likely scenario is that one of the cats has a problem.

My dogs would literally "bust a gut" before going out when the weather doesn't suit them (which for them means when it's raining or very windy). I've never had a dog who wouldn't hold it for ages if he/she didn't want to go out for some reason.

The easy way to find out is to baby gate the room where the litterbox is so Cassie can't access it for a day or so.

Just as an FYI, Purina used to make a litterbox and litter just for dogs. It was called Second Nature. I don't know if it's still on the market or not. If Cassie really is using the cats' litterbox, you might want to check into getting her some kind of litterbox of her own (or piddle pads). The cats might not be too happy about sharing, especially if their box gets filled up quickly. And I'm sure you know what can happen when kitties aren't happy with the state of their toilet!

we have had cats that learned on there own to use the regular toilet in the house by watching us instead of useing there litter box, it could be your dog might have learned to use the litter box by watching the cats use it .

Yes, my parents had a TT many years ago, they had a poodle named Pierre and then I got a poodle named Daise, the first time we went to Myrtle Beach with them they had a litter box for Pierre for during the night or when they went out to eat.
My Daise was only three months old when we went and she had a little piddle accident, well that was the one and only one she had because Pierre scolded her and ushered her to the back and showed her the litter box and forced her right into it, it was precious and we all watched as this went on, then of course we all praised Pierre for his efforts.
Daise returned the favor, we were at the beach, we had the umbrella up but it was hot, Daise at 3 months old showed Pierre how to dig a deep hole and lay in the cool damp sand.
These two were quite a pair for almost sixteen years, they were adorable and they acted almost like they were married...cute.

Thanks
It's funny if you think back to all your pets and we've had plenty, we all could probably write a really funny book of stories.
Sometimes I get a little weepy and then laugh at all the antics these precious creatures put us through.
