Folks I'm looking for some reassurance that I have nothing to worry about...I have a 32' fiver with the rear kitchen. Every once in while I hear a pretty significant POP. The heater is not in use since its summer, the only thing in the general area is the water heater and the refrigerator (I recently had the recall work done on the refrigerator). I've checked the hot water and it is working fine. Does this warrant a trip to the shop?

Sounds like your water heater element firing up. We use electric side while on full hookups as we have a 10 gallon heater and don't use the gas side hardly ever.

Do you mean the furnace is not in use? Is the noise louder outside your RV when standing by the water heater door? Is the water heater operating on propane? Does your water heater have direct spark ignition? You can tell this if you have an igniter that sends a spark to the burner tube when the water heater lights up on propane. Does the water heater ever go into lock-out on start? You would know this if you get an indicator light and you have to turn the water heater switch off and back on to get it to light on propane?
Let us know.

Right, the furnace is not in use? I've never been outside when the pop happened. It doesn't happen very often. Yes, the water heater operates on propane. I went to the back of the trailer and removed the cover...it looks very similar to a standard furnace set up, ignitor switch etc. I believe it does have direct spark ignition but I've never actually been looking at the unit when it kicks on. The water heater has been essentially steady on for years. I'm unfamiliar with the lock-out issue. When I've changed parks, I've never had to relight or turn on or off etc.

Sounds like the water heater may have a spider web in the flash-tube and then causing the burner to have a small "explosion" because it is starved for propane and when the gas builds up, there is a little too much at the time of ignition.
A good cleaning should cure the issue.

I agree with javaseuf. Spiders just love propane and will setup housekeeping in the tube where the air/fuel is mixed. Turn off the water heater during the day and note if you hear the pop while it is off. This will narrow it down to the water heater or fridge.

Dirt dauber nest in the exhaust tube can also cause a "pop" type sound. Easy to see if you open the door and stand back to one side and have someone start the heater. The unit will belch a flame back out of the exhaust tube. I like to never found the nest. It was in the curve where it couldn't be seen. Since it was baked real well, it knocked out real easy.
Good luck, safe travels and happy camping!
