I have a 30-amp 4-prong electric receptical that I would like to hook my 30A TT extension cord into. If I understand this correctly, that 4-prong receptical has 2 hot legs of 120v for a 240v service.
My question: Will a home-made adapter dogbone work for this? What I want to do is connect a 30A TT female end to a 30A appliance male end using 10/3 cord. I would hook the black wire to one of the hot clamps in the appliance plug and simply leave the other unconnected. neutral and ground would connect to their proper wires, of course.
Is there an obvious risk I'm not seeing? or a hidden one? Thanks.

Sounds good to me, just be sure you don't use the 2nd hot lead by accident.

Yes, as long as you use only ONE hot lead, you will have a full 30a 120v service.

Make sure the house connector is wired with a full size neutral (#10) and you are good to go with the adapter.

take the above advise. i did what you are trying to do and blew out the automatic transfer switch. luckly it was a easy fix. but what i did is put one leg to ground or common and the other to the breakers. what the effect was 240 volt to each breaker and BOOOM!!!! breakers triped and the ats fried.
use a voltmeter. if you are not familiar with electrical stuff find a friend there that is.. even a professional electrician.
btw the dogbones are available at many home centers and rv stores.

Hi,
Yes this is very easy for those of us that have been fixing electrical things for many years.
Just be sure to test before plugging in the RV for the first time. And each time you plug in the first time at a differant house. You should have 120 volts from the upper left and right flat blades. Then using a 30 to 15 amp adapter and a receptacle tester, you can see if the three LED's turn on correctly. The two yellow lights should come on and the red one stays off.
I always use a 30 to 15 amp adapter with a circuit tester before plugging in, I leave it next to my fresh water hose so it is handy! The one time I plugged into a backwards wired receptacle I did $400 in damage to my built-in inverter/charger.
If you ever upgrade to a 50 amp RV, it is also possible to wire your dryer receptacle adapter to power the 50 amp rv with 120/240 30 amp service that can run both A/C units and much of the stuff in the RV all at once. Limited to about 7,000 watts.
