Yesterday, the news mentioned that about $0.76 of each $1.00 for gasoline is for crude. Interestingly, the taxes (state and federal) take about the same as the refineries. Many villanize the oil companies, who buy most of their crude on the open market, but no many complain about states like California who two years ago took in a little over $2b in taxes, but now taking in taxes at the rate of $5b per year. That's the worst case, but other states are getting a big windfall and, unlike the oil companies, they have no investment or risk. I suppose at the end of the day prices will not fall very much until we get off the foreign dependance (70% of our crude) and start relying on our own supplies not only for the supply, but also for the reduction of price hikes for various international crisis situations. Best thing we can do is to let our representatives know our feelings during their upcoming break. After all they do work for us, and not the lobbyests.

Can't say that I can get too excited over gas & diesel dropping what amounts to about 3%. Big deal. Plus, we all know it's only temporary. Back when gas was about 30 cents a gallon that would've amounted to less than a penny a gallon. No big deal then --- no big deal now. That 3% most of us can get back on credit card purchases -- sometimes more. If you bought $50 worth of groceries this week and next week the same groceries cost you $48.50 would you be as thrilled? I think not. Just my opinion.
