Short notice business trip to Fairbanks and wanted opinions on what I shouldn't miss with 2, maybe 3 days free time from Fairbanks.
Leaving early tomorrow morning so, obviously, if you post here Sat. morning I probably won't get to read it!
Thanks!

Steam Boat and go on to North Pole and see Santa's House (short drive).
All in all, Fairbanks is VERY DISAPPOINTING. Nasty old dirty shanty town.

Take a drive out the Steese Hwy as far as the Chatanika Lodge. Stop and take a look at the dredge. Drive out the Dalton Hwy to the Pipeline info kiosk.

As per Rosher - the museum at the University is a absolute must see. Steam boat ride was pretty good, and the Alaskan Pipe Line, there is a section above ground just outside of town.
Mike feels the north pole and Santa's House, but I know for a fact he only wanted to sit on Santa's lap. Actually I enjoyed the art work on the building on the out side, and the candy cane lamp poles were different. LOL.....
There is also a mining operation and train ride up the road from the Pipe line. I don't remember the name of it. That my wife enjoyed. Have fun. Bill
Forgot to add the fair grounds, all ways something going on there.

Thanks all, I'm taking notes.
At first I thought I was heading to Anchorage, but not so. Otherwise the Mrs would have gone with me.
Anyone know if Northpole has anything as far as Christmas related? I was thinking of getting our granddaughter something from "the" Northpole

The north pole has Santa's House which is a big gift store selling Christmas stuff. From tree decorations, stocking stuffers, to hard to find items. To me it was a little pricey. The wife enjoyed it a lot more. Hope that helps to answers your questions.
On edit: You can mail it from the North Pole so it will have there post mark on it.

I actually never made it to Santa's house. Some of the guys I worked with went though.
I was working in North Pole at the Flint Hills refinery. I got to work on the tallest tower there (213ft to the top) was quite a view.
