All in all, Fairbanks is VERY DISAPPOINTING. Nasty old dirty shanty town.

Sorry that Alaska didn't fit your bill with all upscale homes. Try putting your home in -60 deg weather for 4 months every year and let's see how you and it holds up. I think that Fairbanks is a very nice city with some very wonderful people.

Chena Hot Springs. And then, Prime Rib at the Turtle Club (Fox, Alaska, just outside Fairbanks) to cap off the evening.

Prime Rib at the Turtle Club?
Now, that's something I think the folks with me will enjoy! Food is always a "gimmy".

Thanks, again, to everyone!

You can add us to the "me too" list. Throughly enjoyed Fairbanks. Did the steamship ride and the dogs exhibit was great. There is also a Farmers Market at the fairgrounds on Saturday that is interesting. Downtown shopping is good, eating places are plentiful, and don't forget there is a Wal Mart and Sam's Club (yippie) to do the re-stocking of all your supplies. Diesel at Sam's Club was 4.99 when we were there.

If we could fit it into our route/schedule, we would go back for some more....

See ya

Made it in one piece and found computer access, although I'm not sure how often I'll get it.

Raining and a lot cooler than Iowa. Not as many mountains (tall mountains) as I had expected but reminds me of home in Oregon non the less!

A couple guys in the group would like to find some gold panning so we'll be looking for some of that, too.

Thanks, again!

Thank you, Texan and JUrban. I'll grant you Fairbanks (and Alaska for that matter) may not be everyone's cup of tea, but that's no reason to dump on someone's home town. I am sure there are places that I wouldn't consider a vacation jewel either. And for those places I just don't consider going back to them.
This is America and everyone has a right to their opinion, but remember it's YOUR opinion. I happen to love Alaska and Fairbanks.

Ditto Steamboat ride, really fun. Go to the Gold Dredge Exhibit and pipeline, then go up the Mountain for Lunch. Just continue North to the first intersection and turn right. There is a little roadhouse just past the Gold mines with another abandoned gold dredge across the road. Pretty good food.

Geez... that's one heck of a review. I've lived in Alaska for almost 30 years and can't imagine living anywhere else. We may not be all glitz and glamour but I'm always eager to get home after traveling outside. No traffic, little crime and some of the best people around. Oh, and did I mention the millions of acres of unspoiled wilderness? That's pretty snazzy too.

As to the OP... definitely see the UAF Museum, the Riverboat Discovery is good and maybe Gold Dredge #8.

Go to Pioneer Park for their all-you-can-eat bbq and seafood dinner, visit the restored village, and stay for the vaudeville show.
