PENTICTON, British Columbia -- Citing a weak dollar, high fuel prices and dimminished demand, West Coast Leisure Homes announces it will cease production of Okanagan truck campers on Sept. 12.

The company is known for its truck camper line, but also manufactures fifth wheels and travel trailers. It is not known how many workers will be impacted by this closure.

In a letter delivered to dealers yesterday, Okanagan President Chris Epp explained the reasons behind the closing. Here is what he wrote:

To our valued dealers and customers,

As you are aware by now, West Coast Leisure Homes Limited will be closing the factory doors on Sept. 12, 2008.

This has been a difficult decision for all of us to make. As you are also aware, our order bank has dried up and the orders that are coming in are not enough to sustain our operation. The cause of this problem is not news to anyone. The Canadian dollar is trading at parity with the U.S. dollar and North American RV market is in a significant slump and fuel prices are at levels that we have never seen before.

I wish to clarify that this is not a bankruptcy closure, as was the case of many of our competitors recently. We are winding down the operation and if things turn around in the next few years, we will be in a position to restart production again.

The company will continue to maintain the warranties on existing Okanagan product, whether they be sitting out on your lot or one of the units we will be producing prior to closing. The details of how this will be handled will be worked out over the next two months. But, for now, you will continue to contact Bob Herbert at our office.

I wish to inform you that we have about 50 truck campers that we need to sell over the next six weeks. To accomplish this, we are going to discount the units according to the following schedule. It should also be noted that any campers previously ordered, but not delivered at this time, will also receive this discount.

In conclusion, I wish to thank all of our loyal dealers for their support over the years and I wish you much success as you move forward.

Sincerely,

Chris Epp, President

That's bad news.
Specially for the City of Penticton.
There are more manufacturers in the north and south Okanagon, hopefully we don't hear more bad news. :-(

Not surprised I put two calls into the Sacramento dealer asking about 126TKS and neither call was returned. I couldn't even find anyone that owned one. If you can't return a call for a 60k camper your probably not doing to be the last one standing in a tough economy.

Sad to hear.

I am guessing Eagle Cap will be the next victim.

I thought Okanagan bought Eaglecap a while back.

That's what I thought too.

Its too bad. I'm guessing this will not be the last announcement of bad news from the truck camper world.

I'd wager in the RV industry in general. I'm guessing that as things continue, the only a small handful of specialty RV makers will be left to make those high end coaches for the ultra-rich. Most folks will likely buy used, and older rigs at an increasing rate because of the high cost of both buying new, and fuel. One takes their savings where they can.

since there are fewer trucks being manufactured and the old ones are fuelish my guess is that the wealthy will continue to own a few rigs... our generation will keep a lot of ours, and our next generation won't be able to afford the truck camper and the truck to haul them.

Bright side... all of the overweight people will get back to hiking and tenting like we used to do.

They did, but the news article specifically mentioned ceasing production of Okanagan TC's. Eagle Caps are still made under the EC name in their Oregon factory. I wonder if they're keeping EC since it's (slightly) more centrally located and/or maybe less costly?? It didn't make sense to have 2 very similar lines of TC's anyway unless you are selling tons of them. It might just be a convenient time for them to consolidate.

That is very sad to hear, I feel bad for all those losing their jobs and it's always sad when a business shuts down. I do have to say though that they are doing it in a very upstanding way, honoring warranties and shutting down in an orderly way and giving everyone involved a heads up before hand. Okanagan sounds like a real class act company, alot better than some that just close up shop and disappear without any warning or communication, leaving everyone hanging.
