I'm looking at an 09 Rockwood 8317SS and was at the dealer today. I noticed on the panel that there was only an "on" for the Hot Water heater...not an option for Electric or Gas. The rep thought there maybe a switch outside, but we couldn't find one...does anyone know if the 09 comes with Electric or Heat Hot Water? I figured the newer models it would be standard, but now I'm a little worried. I have a friend who thought his was Gas only and was burning through propane like no tomorrow, until he figured out it was on the outside.
Thanks,

When we had our 2006 Rockwood, the electric switch was actually behind the access panel on the outside of the trailer. It was near the pilot light. There was no gas/electric switch inside the camper. To run it on electric we had to throw the switch from the outside.

well my switch for electric is inside the outside cover of the access panel for the hot water heater, bottom left corner, a lil on off toggle switch, as for the gas switch, its located were my controls for the slide outs, tank heaters, and the battery/grey/black/fresh water electric displays are, the inside switches in the rockwoods are in a nice fancy looking cabinet door near bathrooms

The "ON" switch located in the galley is for the LP Gas operation. Electric operation is controlled by a pinned switch located inside the access panel outside.

Now I am confused. We have a 110 breaker that is marked "Hot Water Heater". Does that breaker also control the DSI for the LP gas? I thought that was 12V.
We have not turned that 110V breaker off since we got the camper 2 months ago. I thought it would only be powered if hooked up to the 110V shore line.
We also run both at the same time, told by the dealer this is OK. Ours is only the 6 gallon and we were worried we should have gotten a 10 gallon, but it was not an option. We have yet to run out of hot water.

well mike my dealer said the same thing about running them at same time, but RV enthusiest at the campgrounds said not to , when the hotwater heater breaker is turned on it sends power to the switch in the outside panel, that switch has to be on for it to constantly be powering the element in tank, as for the gas igniter, it works from some power source ,,my thing was it had to have a fail safe. If that breaker is off , that would mean the gas switch would be on all the time. I know when i flip breaker off, theres a white throw switch in my main control panel inside on the wall with all the other neat switches for the TT,,its white with a red light, if breaker is off that wont light up , so how does the electric igniter engage.

Bill you have raised even more questions about the operation of the HWH. Our TT is at our storage area now, we will be using it next week and this issue is one that I will be looking at closely. Thanks for your suggestion. The question still is how does the HWH get its 12 Volt power? This is our first TT with the electic and LP option.

WILDBILLUSMC is wrong about the above statement. I run my HWH on gas only with the breaker on the main panel turned off. The DSI ignitor is 12V. Otherwise you could not have hot water if dry camping without electric hookups.
If there is going to be a heavy demand for hot water I will turn the electric element on and run both gas and electric.

John do you think it is OK to leave that breaker turned on all the time? That way when you plug into a site with 110V your water heater starts to heat. The more I know the more confused I get with this topic.
