Had a bad alternator on a freightliner/cat 350 Winnebago rig. Had it rebuilt. Works for awhile, then shuts down. If you leave it sit, it will return to normal. Sometimes overcharging, sometimes undercharging, sometimes nothing. Thoughts?

Ken,
Sounds like the regulator is going.
I was coming across Ohio a few weeks ago and mine( Delco 22SI) did the same thing, it would show 13volts and jump to 15.5volts.
Fortunately I carry a new spare and pulled into a truck stop and changed it out.
All back to normal.
Take to an Alternator shop.

I would also look at the regulator.

I appreciate the regulator feedback....would you expect the regulator to have been looked at when the unit was rebuilt, or am I just showing how much of a novice I am? LOL

Check out the connections on the back of alternator. A loose connection may be the culprit.

to much heat with not enought cooling will cause the regulator to act up.when you change out altanators its always good to use the fan from the origanal or make sure its the same there is differant cooling fans they use for more air flow.

Ken elecrical parts are like light bulbs, never know when they will go out. Most of the time it is the day before you go on vacation and the wife is nipping at your heals.Any time you need help just ask. All of us here have to ask at sometime. I have been at this for forty years and still learn every day.

Texas et al,
Ok, well, forget the "rebuilt" avenue, although some will swear by it...I was headed out to Myrtle Beach a week ago and got fed up with the alternator stuff, so swung by Freightliner and had a new one put in....OH YEAH...2,000 mile round trip, no issues...enjoyed the sunny south....I am happy again!

delco alternators and clones have the regulator built in, it can suffer from heat fatigue, they have built in thermal control to reduce output as the alt warms up, when mine is cold it will put out almost 15volts, but drops to less than 14 than after the engine warms up
many other alternators use an external regulator, that may not have been checked when the alt was rebuilt
