Doug, what test are you speaking of? I am pretty much "up" on things like this but I don't recall hearing of any DNA test to verify that a dog is a certain breed. Yes, there's the one that claims to identify the breeds in the genetic makeup of a mixed breed, but I've heard of results from that test that were 100% in conflict with the known heritage of the dog .
My own dogs are DNA tested, but that only proves that their parents are who the breeder claimed them to be, not that they are Australian Shepherds.

DNA testing can verify the sire & dame, but not the breed. It does the former by comparing the DNA of a dog to the supposed parents.
Only an handful for dogs had had their DNA fully sequenced and there is no database of the differences between breeds. Identifying the breed by an absolute reading is at least a decade off.
Yes, there is some controversy about how accurate the test is, but this is the first one out there and available. It does claim to determine what breeds are represented in a mix. I don't thinks will will verify that a pure bred dog is pure.

I was watching a show last night called Flipping It or something like that. Anyway he has three dogs and ordered the test at 200 bucks a pop, if I understood them right, and they came back with some crazy results for what the dogs looked like. Save your money...He wished he had.
