Sour grapes?
Mandrake has got it right IMO.
No, I'm just a realist and I think much of their customer base is the same folks up to their eyeballs in credit card debt and living in a home they no longer can afford. Now, they also can no longer afford the designer coffee either.

I agree with Mandrake as well. When I opened our first coffee house in Boulder Creek, Ca., we fashioned it after a shop in Capitola called Mr. Toots. We had oversized tables where people could come and spread out their books and work and study.
We sold that cafe in 1986 and it, as well as Mr. Toots, are still going strong today.
I try to always patronize the locally owned cafes and Peetes, although a small chain, is one of my favorites. It too was one that Howard Schultz once was involved with but has managed to move on without him. They have had little growth and retains their philosophy of staying reagional and small and being a part of the local community.

Starbuck's has made some really stupid moves at times that cost them dearly by NOT opening in certain areas. In Towson MD (Just north of Baltimore) they did not have a store within walking distance of Towson University until last year. How can you not have a location near a university with several thousand students? That area has a high yuppie population and appeal.

I went into a Starbucks in Honolulu last Christmas, the menu was so goofy I couldn't find "just a cup of coffee". Down the street at convenience store I found one. Bye Bye Starbucks.

I went with a friend to Starbucks one time and just that once. Tasted it and I don't like burnt coffee. Just left it sitting on the table. Try 8 O'clock coffee it's good.

We have the same situation in our village. One Starbuck is independent building, the other one is across the street and parking lot inside Safeway story. Seems both have enough business.
Same here!
One in Barnes and Noble in the mall...another free-standing building on the parking lot....and yet another in the Kroger store a mile away.
None closing.
These are two freestanding buildings

Closing 600 stores huh. Wow.
I guess that means there will be only 12 Starbucks in every city block now.
Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?
