Good Luck
Very accurate!
However, you didn't mention that each DMV office has their OWN
training program, enforce ALL regulations as they see fit . . . . . because they KNOW they are the ONLY office in the State.
Also - unsuspecting public! Not!
C'mon! CA DMV has been like that forever!

They may have always been a mess, but every time I deal with them they manage to surprise me with new ways to demonstrate their ignorance and total lack of common sense. I once ask the manager in one DMV office where he managed to find so many dumb people. He response was a blank stare. I think he thought it was a stupid question as he saw no problem. Buy the way the employee I was dealing with was from south of the border and spoke broken English, the manager, Mr. Wong also struggled with English. Go figure
A few years ago my mother who lives here in CA remarried to a man who lived in Louisiana. They got the licence in Louisiana and had their ceremony there, but came back to CA to live. When she went to change her CA drivers licence, they asked for a copy of the licence, which my mom produced. Now remember, in Louisiana the government districts are "Parishes", equivilant to our counties. The DMV employee looked at the licence and said "That is some certificate your church gave you, it says "Parish" on it, we need a licence" My mom explained, the worker would not budge from the it's a certificate your church gave you line. The head supervisor was called, agreed with the employee, and told my mom to come back when she had the legal licence. My mom had to go to a diffenet DMV office to get her licence changed where they had heard of the state of Louisiana.

While it is true that most CHP dont know what to ask for as far as licensing RV's, I got it in case there is an accident and a plaintiff's lawyer finds out I am not properly licensed.
If there is a wreck and you dont have the license you may be in a pickle.
Also, when they start checking and you are 8 hours from home and get pinched it would be a hassle to deal with.
I agree here, also, what about the insurance companies. If you are licensed to tow 5er 10k to 15k lbs, and something happens, this could be their out and not cover incident.
Just my opinion, John
Could be, but it is not because of the over abundance the the DMVs' stupidity and confusion.

firecapt1 has it right, you will more than likely have to enlighten the DMV on this one by taking a copy of this page with you to them.
Do you really think the DMV will let you tell them what to do, even though you are correct?
I will not even try to get this piece of do nothing endorsement because the DMV is well known for screwing up anything that is little different. How about the guy whom had his license suspended because some DMV genius decided he needed a Physical for the endorsement. When and if the DMV wakes-up and gets it wright, then and only then will I might apply for the endorsement. Don't you think judges know about this mess? If you have to go to court, you will have plenty of reasons for not getting an endorse from the DMV because they don't know how to issue it. That is a proven fact. Just leave it alone, you will be better off.

This is a dangerous attitude, judges have the responsibility to uphold the law. Telling a judge that you knowingly ignored the law because the DMV is stupid and didn't know what you wanted will get you no ware. Plus, we all know that the insurance companies know about this law and won't miss the opportunity to deny your claim under the provision that you were unlicensed to tow the RV. Without the proper endorsement or license you loose and everybody else wins. So I would recommend that none of you take that cavalier attitude, no matter how frustrating it is to deal with the DMV. Get all your ducks in a row including their little booklet and be prepared to show them what you want and get legal.
Well, countryrose you're right about going ahead and getting the endorsement.
If your trlr is between 10K and under 15K - it's simply a 20 question test,
no big deal.
This "debate" has been on here several times! There's plenty of posters
who "got it done" quickly and easily at their local DMV
However, I'll have to disagree about your judge statement!
Yes, judges *DO* have the responsibility to uphold the law - - however,
interpretation (of the law) from judge to judge (for Infractions & Misdemeanors)
can be dramatically different for the exact same offense (cited exactly identical).
Been in civil court where the judge obviously hasn't read the information about the case before him! Been in the 4th Dist Ct of Appeal (3 judges) - Judge number one stated he didn't want the attorney briefs to interfere with his lunch. Judge number two, said she hadn't had time to study the case. Judge number three wouldn't commit to any level of understanding - but simply may not have wanted to look as bad as numbers one & two.
Back to jdog's statement - as you can see, I wouldn't count on a judge "knowing about this mess" - or seeing it your way.
Unfortunately, - it's *NOT* a proven fact!
Why? Because of all the endorsements the DMV -HAS- issued!
Bottom line -
We live in a very litigious society.
Your insurance will cover you up to the limits of your policy,
above that - you're on your own.

So, if I am reading this thread, and the DMV stuff correctly, pulling my 15,554# Montana I will have to take a physical, a written test and arrange a pre-trip and a driving test? Does anyone know if any Ca DMV office can do all of these?
