I applied for an endorsement for a 5th between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds. They gave me a temporary license and a week before that expired, I called DMV. They forgot to tell me I also needed a new picture, even though my current picture is less than 6 months old. There is no option in their software to notify me by mail that my temporary license was about to expire and a picture was needed. I just had to know that they somehow might not take care of any issues and make a note on my calendar to call when the temporary was about to expire. Now if my temporary had expired and I got in an accident, the insurance company sure had an easy out.

I have my RV Endorsement...15K 5er...made an 'On-line' DMV appointment and went with copied DMV "instructions/rules". Not much confusion...took a 20(?) question test...an inspector came out to verify the VIN numbers and GVWR on my coach and I was done. This last time was in '05. This was in Chico, CA.
Enjoy the journey.....

Recreational Trailer Endorsement??? Just add it to the list of things I did not know about. Thank you all for bringing it to my attention. I live/drive in California and tow a 5th-wheel with a 12,000 lbs GVWR, so I will need to get the endorsement.
Question?? In preparation will I only need to review The Recreational Vehicles and Trailers Handbook AND the California Drivers Handbook or are there others??

This state is something else. We are overloaded with illegal’s. They are allowing illegal trucks to enter from Mexico into California, and the list goes on. But they will focus on requiring us to have a special stamp on our license to allow us to drive our RVs in the state. Un believable !!

Got mine last year. No big deal, once I finally managed to educate the DMV folks that it was in fact necessary to have the endorsement... I must say though, the DMV folks were very polite and researched the law expediently to get me tested and back out on the road. I aced the test after reading the booklet for about 1/2 hour (just prior to closing time at the DMV). They took a new picture and I was out the door. No big deal.
I'm actually glad that they have people take this test. 10-15K towing down the road is a bit more than I feel comfortable, with regards to inexperienced drivers. I personally feel that it is a good educational tool, and makes drivers aware that they are in fact assuming a greater responsibility when towing heavier loads on the highway.

Funny thing about this, is that I printed this out prior to going in for my Restriction 41 (that's the "magic" codeword) endorsement back in May 2007 http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm/fuseac........d/19324747/gotomsg/19602174.cfm#19602174 some of the clerks in the Oxnard DMV had not seen that publication before. I'm glad I had it in hand as it, and my persistence, eventually got me what I wanted.

This endorsement makes me feel alot safer. Those whom have it are now safer drivers.

Other than this forum, I have never heard of the endorsement. I know it does exist, but I have never gotten any notice in the mail or other wise. I renew my trailer license every year, no mention of the endorsement. Nothing in the newspapers. I have not been notified by my insurance company. If this endorsement is so important, then why are we not being notified by some authority? Most people whom are towing do not read this forum and have no idea about this endorsement. Why?

jdog, I suggest you read posts a little more thoroughly to understand what is actually being posted, rather than asssssuming the intended message and taking pot shots.
I simply tried to state that I felt it is an educational tool that might hopefully make drivers more aware that towing heavy loads is a responsibility they should take seriously. That's all. SHEESH.
On your following post, however, I think is a good question, that I too have wondered about. Why isn't this endorsement requirement more widely advertised?
