Many states tax trucks and cars differently.. Over the road semi's pay, usually, more in fuel tax than car drivers... NOW in AZ the auto pumps have stickers
"It is illegal to fill a vehicle over 26,000 pounds at this pump"
26,000 is the CGVW for my motor home so I'm good to go (It's less, and towed is only about 22,000 pounds less)
Now, I have an opinion of this (Truckers include the tax in the cost of transport, and thus it's added to the cost of goods so WE end up paying it in the end) so we should give the trucks a tax break. But I'm not a legislator
However if you want to use the higher taxed truck pumps
I thank you for paying more tax than you need to and leaving me to pay less.
Last time we were in AZ (2005) we were specifically told to use the auto pumps and our GVWR is over 34,000#'s. Have they changed the law since then and removed the RV exemption?

Yes, the RV lanes also have gasoline. As a gasser, I don't go to the truck lanes and I take up too much room to use the auto lanes. The RV lanes also may have a dump facility in the lane and long handled squeegees for the windshield. The RV lanes also have more turning room at the end than the auto lanes. As a 29 ft rig, they are just right for me!
So if we are a diesel pusher...are we suppose to use the RV lanes or can we use the lanes where the truckers fill up? It just seems like the truck lanes have more room...and one time although we saw a sign at one of the truck stops for RV's...they really didn't have a specific lane, so we would have been in trouble had we followed the sign. Most places we go don't have specific lanes, so that's why we usually just go where the truckers go.
We are always quick to fill up...I go in with a walkie talkie to give them the credit card/turn on the pump, while my DH pumps gas...I stay inside and pay, so that saves time, too...he radios me the gallons and amount. He will pull ahead when he's finished, and before I come out so that if a trucker is waiting...or even if there's not one waiting...it will free up the pump.
There have been numerous occassions, however, when the truckers haven't been so "considerate"...one time we pulled behind a truck to wait our turn. The driver took his dear sweet time and I think ended up going inside and eating lunch...because he wasn't at his truck and he wasn't at the counter paying...so "niceness" and "consideration" can go both ways...
But...back to my original question...we usually use the truck lanes...and have never used the RV lanes. We have only been to a few truck stops that even have them...is this still okay? And is there any savings with doing so?

Seems logical to me...
RV's are not truckers.
Sure, it is faster and easier access to use the trucker lanes. But an RV is not a truck.
Just like cars do not belong on the on the truck bypass lanes on the freeway.
And regarding size, I tow a 22' trailer with my 35' motorhome. My combined length is more than 65' (including trailer toad). I am longer than most other RV's out there. I never use the truck lanes, so I also have never had an issue with a trucker.

The fuel companies charge more for fuel to the truckers as they have to bill the trucking company for payment. If you go inside and tell them that your are buying fuel for personal RV they will reduce your charge about 6 cents per gal. Never had a problem with this. My personal RV is a gas burner but I fly out and drive son's diesel motorhome back twice a year and I fuel in the truck lanes without any problems and I do speak to the truckers beside me and they mostly are friendly.
AZ charges the truckers an add'l tax on fuel. That's what wa8yxm was talking about. There used to be an exemption for ALL RV's no matter what the GVWR was. In fact someone posted a letter from someone in State Gov't from AZ that stated that there was an RV exemption. But laws change too.
We use the FJ truck lanes exclusively and never had any negative problems with truckers. We have had truckers come up and compliment us on our rig. Being 45 feet and over 60 with a toad, the RV lanes are usually too small for us.

I have to defend FJ to some extent here. They provide RV lanes with dump, water, propane, diesel and gas at one location. Never seen that at a truck lane. You can actually take your time unless there is another RVer waiting on you, rare, but it happens. With you FJ card, you get the cash price. I was disappointed when they dropped the 'discount' every one wants to think they get a deal I guess. Also, you are not limited to 50 or 100 dollar purchase with the FJ card.
Most provide an RC parking area away from the truck traffic/parking. This may not be the case in some of the older stops that were converted to FJ locations.
You can overnight or take a long break in the RV area without being hassled by trucks pulling in and out beside you.
Do they want the RV business? Of course they do. I would ask, 'do you appreciate the amenities provided by FJ for the RVers?'.

You write down the license number of the truck and go inside and tell the manager to use the loudspeaker and get some JERK to move his truck!
