What ever wire is connected to ground (the frame) is always connectd last. It is also disconnected first.

The reason is that when connecting/disconnecting the hot wire, if you accidentally touch the wrench to the frame you do not want it to spark.

So sayeth my autoshop teacher a very long time ago.

Good answers. But you don't need to worry about frying anything (except your wrench) no matter what cable you put on first.

To avoid any arcing when the last cable connection is made, make sure all the 12v equipment is turned off.

The standard practice is to hook up the negative last

You may wonder why

in fact it should (in theory) make no difference

However if you have negative disconnected and, as you hook up the positive, your wrench slips and 'Shorts" the positive to the chassis..... Nothing happens. You see there is no path to ground for the power to flow

And if while connecting the negative,, Your wrench slips and shorts NEGATIVE to chassis.. Who cares.. The negative wire is doing that anyway

But if you hook positive up last,, And your wrench slips and shorts to the chassis.. It may well melt.. WHILE YOU ARE HOLDING IT

This is not good.

Negative off first and on last.
