I've done a ton or reading here and elsewhere online to make sure we're good when crossing over and returning. However, I'm wondering if the Alcohol numbers are per adult or per group. I'm assuming per adult which would work out well so we can bring 2 (24can) cases of beer with us - but I'd rather get the facts.

Alcoholic beverages
You are allowed to import only one of the following amounts of alcohol free of duty and taxes:

1.5 litres (53 imperial ounces) of wine;
1.14 litres (40 ounces) of liquor;
a total of 1.14 litres (40 ounces) of wine and liquor; or
24 x 355 millilitre (12 ounces) cans or bottles (maximum of 8.5 litres) of beer or ale.

Forget about bringing your beer over the line, ours is much better. Bring your quota of Liquor you'll make up the difference on our high beer prices.

I thought I read a case of beer over there runs about $35. Over here I can get a case of Labatt for about $18 after bottle deposit. Is the beer $17 x 2 cases = $34 better?

BTW, I'll be bringing the biggest bottle of Captain I'm allowed(:

Beer is $35 dollars a case. So you're right it's best to bring the Canadian beer with you!

Of course the Canadian Beer that You buy in the US isn't the same as the Canadian Beer that We get to Buy here! Nor are the US Brands that We have here the same!

Bottom line is Bring All that You can and Hide a few extras ! It'll make You feel better!

TAXES…
If the price of Booze up here scares you wait until you buy some Fuel ……….
It always gets me why people will ensure they can get by with the cheapest of anything including camping at Wally World while in Canada then in the next thread someone will complain about they roads are un- paved or in very poor shape, the best one was the toilet paper was empty in the Out House near Banff.....
A good deal of the High Prices of Booze and Fuel is tax…Provincial and Federal Tax
I also look to save as much money as possible in these days of inflated prices, however if everyone that is passing through to Alaska, or just making a short trip into Canada doesn’t purchase anything, who is left to pay for the improvements to our roads, campground, Federal and or Provincial as well as our Parks…. I guess guys like me that live up here year round.
TAXES….Thats why you pay more, just like the rest of us north of 49.…….....................and our Booze up here is better… hicK-uP...
Thanks I had to vent… now I will go pay my over due Property Taxes….. of $3000.00.............

Hey Soup, you're loony if you think we won't be dropping a load of loonies (ha I made a funny) while we're in your backyard. In fact, I plan on grocery shopping less than 10 minutes off the bridge. I know you were generalizing, understand your point, and can even relate a bit. There are quite a few Canadians driving over the river and through the Michigan woods without stopping to buy anything on their way to other parts of the US BTW, 2 cases of beer will definitely not be enough (yes damnit I'm the one sitting by the fire late at night drinking) so I plan on buying some of the "good stuff" too!

Isnt that the great Canadian pastime?......to complain about taxation.....If there wasnt such a tax burden up here we would live in a Utopia.....what would there be to yak about?????.. The second on the list is Politicians....if the taxes were low there would be no good reason to trash them....I suppose the next one would be Lawyers.....we could probably work on them for a few years......

I can get a little overboard on the taxation issue, but once a person spends a few months away from home and notices the differences out there...returning home is sweet... but in a short while it wears off and I complain about them again..:} :} :}...

I too am planning a trip to Canada in the upcoming weeks. Thanks for the booze warning. What are the current gas prices? Do they give cash discounts at the pump? Will be there for a good 2-3 weeks so I'm sue I will spend my fair share of 'loonies', but most likely not enough to offset those taxes Soup.

Thanks for the info!!!
