Will be leaving Friday with wife, DIL and 6 month old baby GD for a rush drive to Tacoma, WA. I'm excited about a long road trip...but bummed because it will be in a car and the van will stay here in Mass. as the purpose of the trip is to get my DIL's car to Fort Lewis where my son will be stationed until Dec after his arrival home from Iraq on the 31st. We'll be flying back.
My wife is from Puerto Rico and has never seen much of the states. The only other road trip she's been on was one to Fort Leonard Wood, MO 2 years ago when my son graduated MP school. She loved it! She already was a fan of camping, so I'm hopeful that these road trips show her how much there is to see in our country and whets her traveling appetite. I'd be a happy man then! (Ok, I'm a happy man now...but, MORE happy!)

Bumed yes but what a great reason for a road trip. I'm sure your wife will be hooked on road trips, as there is so much to see in this country.
Have a safe and fun trip and wish your son a safe return to the US.

Don't get in too big a hurry in driving from MA out here to beautiful WA! Lots of things to see as you drive west, guess you'll probably take I-90 all the way to save mileage and time. Scenery is great, hope it doesn't get too hot for you in the midwest. You're going to have a great trip and hope you get to spend a few days in the local area with your son on his return from Iraq. Take a drive out to the Olympics and see the Pacific, it will be a great way for him to feel proud to be an American serving his country. And welcome him home with a big hug from all of us who are grateful for their service!

I neglected in my original post to mention that I made this trip once..38 years ago when I was stationed at Fort Lewis. It was my last duty station, and his first when he went regular army about 1.5 years ago. That trip, with my first wife, was incredible! We saw Yellowstone, Mt Rushmore, The Badlands, Grand Tetons, and yes, even Wall Drug! I lived at Fort Lewis for about a year, and we went all over that area, and made many, many trips to Mt Ranier! We both wanted to stay there (mind boggling to think how life would have been different had we done so! One of those "roads not taken" things....) but the local economy had tanked and there were no jobs to be had.
Since it was decided that we're doing this not too much time has passed in between my statements that I wish we had unlimited money and time for this... a couple of months and she'd be a road trip lover for sure!
Thank you for your comments about my son's service. It had made me pretty nervous these past few months, but I am very proud of him indeed.

Have a great trip! Give your son a big hug from me when you see him. My son is also Army, home going to college right now (thankfully). His best friend is at Ft Lewis until Sept, then he'll be off to the sandbox.

Visiting the area again plus seeing it through your wife's fresh evey ought to make this trip mighty special. How wonderful to have your family together. Have a great time, you'll miss the convience of your rig for sure, but sounds like a blast.

I was also thinking that could tow or trailer! Have you considered that?
But have a safe trip, anyway, and hugs to your family and especially your son.

Tow the car on a rental trailer. Take your time. Have your cake and eat it too.
Enjoy the trip in any case.
