There's a couple of issues with towing the car (which I'd love to do!). The primary issue is that my DIY class B only has seatbelts for 2 people. It only has captain's chairs in the front, and then in the very back the two dinette seats/storage boxes. Wouldn't be good for 3 adults and a baby in a car seat I'm afraid. And, if that wasn't reason enough to leave it home, the fact that it still needs some mechanical work before I'd want to take it on a 6k+ mile trip should be.
The map shows the states my wife and I have driven (or camped) in together.
Hmmmm........ I wonder how many times I'd get stopped? I think a B2500 hi-top behind a Pontiac Grand Prix might get a look or two.
Trust me... I've considered just about every way of doing this that there is...and I'm fairly inventive!
Well, here I am sitting in a motel room in Fergus Falls, MN with an update. Though I had planned to be on the road at 7am Friday, the wife had other plans (oh, surprise!) and we actually got the wheels turning at 11am. I had planned to drive 750 miles a day, so was very concerned about the late start. Hoped to average 60mph too..... 'nother surprise there...we're really only averaging about 50.
Anyway... I ended up driving 1580, minus the 1.5 hours the wife drove while I napped. (She was supposed to share a bigger piece of the driving time, but couldn't sleep while I drove because her hip has been killing her due to riding in a car seat. After she finally did get a fitful 3 hours nap and I got unlost after messing up the I90-I94 decision north of Chicago, I cat-napped for a short and she drove.)We were stopping only for gas, bathrooms and changing the baby, but at least one of those events seems to occur about once an hour and rarely seem to want to happen at the same time for some reason.
This is a new all time record for me...the old one was 963 miles. Also, this one will never be broken, I ain't up for that again.
We are seeing tons of RVs... including a half dozen or so B vans. Seeing those sure makes me wish that was how we were traveling, the car is cramped! I have been keeping track, at least until I slept for the hour or so, and during the night, which was while crossing Ohio, Ind and IL.. the counts for those states are very low because I couldn't see them in the dark.
If you're in ND, Montana, ID or WA, look for us today... black Pontiac with a roof cargo box and red white and blue writing on the back window and give us a toot! We plan to be in Tacoma sometime tomorrow morning.
Sure do miss the van!
Don't drive too far w/o some rest, everything is fine out here and you will have plenty of time to get to Tacoma. Better to arrive there in good spirits and refreshed rather than dog tired. Stop once in awhile at the nice rest areas along I-90 and I-94, you've got lots of miles left before you arrive. Hope you have a safe trip and that the homecoming with your son turns out fine!
Boy thats alot of miles in a day to drive, (and sit). Best plans sometimes just dont turn out the way they should. So take a deep breath and hopefully you can enjoy your trip a bit. How is the baby doing, with all this riding?
Have a safe trip,
There has never been a better traveling baby! She's all smiles and only cries at all when she gets hungry. She couldn't travel better!
My son comes in, if the schedule holds, at 1 am on the 30th. We are trying to get there quickly because his wife needs to find and get a ready to move in to apartment before he gets there. The army has changed the arrival time by 2 days (two changes) already...both sooner. If they do that again we'll be hurting for time for sure if we aren't there yet.
Ok, hitting the road! Post when I can.
Thanks... did I tell ya about getting lost in Wisconsin? LOL Maybe next time I'll remember that it's I90 out of Chicago, not 94. And maybe by then (after all, I make these trips every 38 years LOL) route 50 won't be closed after driving on it for what seemed like forever!
