Thanks guys.
Wa8yxm: That, combined with previous comments, makes it seem so much easier. I had every intention of using the dremel, so I'm glad you confirmed it should work. Great!
John: Funny thing is that it was down about 4". I had it at the exact same angle as the trailer behind me. He was just fine. My issue is that it was such a fast rain it couldn't get off fast enough and it created a little pool... Then this pool of course collected more water and it was a vicious cycle until BANG.
Marsha&Frank: Yep, I'm hoping to get out of this within a couple hundred dollars and lots of experience. There are a couple of punctures at the end where the glass table it shattered punctured. But very easy to patch if I'm going to bother.

One additional thing I did was used the DW's seam ripper to cut the sewn seam around the tube - the full length of the tube - so I could easily get the fabric off without additional damage. The tube buckled and split so that increased it's size too much to slide the fabric off. I then took it to a local boat shop that does covers and awnings and had them re-sew the seam - I think he charged me $20.00 - thought it was well worth it!

GSF: Thanks, I'm sure that'll be helpfull.
Marsha & Buck(since I don't know which one of you are helping here..hehe): Yes, I was thinking the same thing. There are some holes caused by the glass table it broke about 6 inches from the end. So I was thinking of getting it shortened 6 anyway.

Mikeyxx - all my responses are to you to help with your question - one thing - if you shorten the main pull out length you will want to make sure that the arms will accommodate that. On our ZipDee there are detentes ( holes in the arms ) for various stages of opening with the farthest being full open, Some of the newer awning I have seen, but not looked real close at, look like they are continuously adjustable so it should not be a problem - just something to have in mind. When I messed up ours there were ( are ) some small holes in the fabric - I used a fabric repair kit I found on the internet - looked like clear nail polish - it is still holding the Sunbrella material together but there is no stress on those areas and they are just small puncture holes.
Anyhow, hope some of this helps you - good luck and let us know how it goes - pictures maybe

GSF, Thanks for the link. My awning is fine now, but you never know when you will need this info. I have printed the info to file for future needs. I have been RVing long enough to know that eventually all of these things will probably happen sooner or later.

You got a good idea there Farmer (But then I expect this kind of thinking from Farmers)
You don't plan what to do *IF* something happens
You plan what to do *WHEN* something happens
Saves a lot of hair tearing when it happens.
I learned a lot about awnings last summer when a gust of wind came along and... Well, I'd allready retracted my awning so no damage.... Friend and neighbor on the next site.... Not so lucky
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

I don't know if all tubes are alike but the one I helped repair had three channels that the spring and spring holder slides into. The channels go all the way from one end to the other so the spring can be used on any length tube.
Did the same as others drill out the rivets pull the spring and cut to size.
Be careful when winding (or unwinding) spring has lots of pressure and you can wind in the wrong direction (backwards).
